Post Who do You want? and why? http://uhcougars.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/briles_art00.html worth taking a long look at - Art Briles, University of Houston Post by: kcal, Nov 27, 2007 in forum: The Tiger's Den
It's supply and demand. Not what someone else makes. If they think he's worth a winning program then they should do what they think it's worth to keep him. Nick was unproven and we paid him over a million which almost no one was making at the time. It has zero to do with what other coaches are making. It's what he's worth to you. Nick was worth 10x his salary if not more despite all the academicians and peripheral fans who cried about it at the time. Same reason USC is willing to pay sumlin whatever. It doesn't mean he's the best coach. Just the best available in their opinion. So you pay to keep from sucking with a chance to hit the lotto. And keeps the fanbase happy and interested.
Paying Briles now makes perfect sense. He is the best coach they have had in a long time. Their program went down the tubes the last time they lost a good coach and it took a long time to get competitive again. Add to that the fact that they are spending $260 mil on a new stadium on campus and have sold over a $100 mil in suites & premium seating. They have to have Briles when the stadium opens next year.
The staff also got around a 20% raise. I was talking with a coach last night about how soft Art has gotten. Art use to teach his players to hand the ball to the officials after each play, quicker to keep his offense moving. He wanted the players to make it easier for the officials to spot the ball for the next play. He liked to keep the defense offballanced.
After giving up 20 quick points in less than a quarter, that defense looked really impressive holding Tech to 14 points from that point on.
What do you know, after talking him up and giving so much props as he is getting the big payday his team blows it. Hard to call a play when your QB can't complete a pass. Poor Sumlin, I mean Briles.
When Petty let the turf monster tackle him, and then they ran unsuccessfully on first down from the 1 1/2, I knew they were not going to get in the endzone. Then the fumble happens. I knew they were in trouble.
Before Phil Bennett got to Baylor, Art was 4-8, 4-8, and 7-6. Phil came in 10-3, too often Offensive Head Coaches forget about the other side of the ball. Phil is still not where he wants to be with his players on that side of the ball, but getting there.
And Art Briles got schooled by Mike Gundy yesterday: http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/recap?gameId=333270197
