Auburn talks to Trooper Taylor -

AUBURN - Newly hired Auburn coach Gene Chizik has requested and received permission from Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy to interview Taylor, the Cowboys’ co-offensive coordinator, according to a source close to the interview process.

Taylor coached receivers at Tennessee from 2004-07 before leaving for Oklahoma State.

STARKVILLE — Dan Mullen's new coaching staff at Mississippi State took another step toward completion … with the … addition of a former major college head coach and a Southern Miss assistant known for his recruiting prowess.
Carl Torbush, the former North Carolina head coach who has spent the past three seasons as a position coach at Carson-Newman College, and Frank Wilson, the running backs coach and co-recruiting coordinator at USM, have been hired.
Torbush, 57, brings a lengthy resume as a defensive coordinator that dates back to Ole Miss in the early 1980s. And Wilson, 35, brings a stout reputation as a recruiter that dates to his days as a New Orleans high school coach.

Wilson was also the Ole Miss recruiting coordinator under Oh No.
Torbush was defensive coordinator at Bama under Dennis Franchione.

ATHENS - Tennessee has requested and received permission from Georgia to interview Bulldogs assistant football coach Rodney Garner for a position on the Vols’ staff, Georgia spokesman Claude Felton said Saturday night.

Garner has been on Georgia’s staff since 1998. He was a Tennessee assistant in 1996-97, coaching offensive tackles and tight ends.

Chavis had his interview the day following the Peach Bowl. Nothing on the others. I don't understand why Miles is taking so long to make the announcement.

Word is Vance Joseph has declined an offer from LSU for DB Coach.

I was hoping we would pull that off. He is the 49ers DB coach.

:geaux: Thought Chavis interviewed way before the bowl game.:huh: Was under the impression this (Chavis/DC) was a done deal for a while, just waiting for the formality of the official announcement including the other assistant coaching positions maybe. Hoping Chavis is a done deal anyway. Like you, I'm getting impatient waiting for the "official word". Maybe something will come out tomorrow, hopefully, and we'll all be happy. :LSU231:

:geaux: Too bad about Joseph, that would've been sweet. Who does it look like now for DB and also for DL? Is Chavis still supposed to bring his DL coach from Tenn.? :LSU231:

Brick Haley, in his second season as the Bears defensive line coach, was hired on February 23, 2007. The 19-year coaching veteran came to Chicago after three seasons as the defensive line coach at Mississippi State. Haley has been a collegiate coach at eight institutions, including time as a defensive coordinator at Baylor and Troy State.

In his first season with the Bears in 2007, Haley oversaw a defensive line that registered 28 of the Bears 41 sacks. Six different defensive linemen made a mark in the sack department, led by Adewale Ogunleye’s nine, tied for 19th most in the NFL. Ogunleye also forced six fumbles and recovered a team-high three opponent fumbles. Pro Bowler Tommie Harris registered a career-high eight sacks, second most among NFL defensive tackles in 2007. Alex Brown was the only player on the Bears roster in 2007 with a sack (4.5), interception (one), forced fumble (two) and fumble recovery (two). Under the mentoring of Haley, Chicago defensive linemen registered 25 tackles for losses in 2007.

Prior to joining the Bears the 19-year coaching veteran spent three seasons as the defensive line coach for Mississippi State University (2004-06). Haley helped improve a Bulldogs defense that finished 41st in the nation in 2006 after finishing 113th a year before his arrival. MSU ranked 36th in rush defense in 2006 and 33rd in tackles for loss. Under Haley’s watch, Bulldogs defensive end Titus Brown developed into a second-team all-SEC selection after leading the team and ranking fifth in the conference in sacks in 2006. Another Haley protégé, Michael Heard, ranked 10th in the SEC in sacks in 2006. The previous year Haley coached the SEC leader in sacks (third in NCAA) and tackles for loss (fourth in NCAA) in Willie Evans.

Before arriving at Mississippi State, Haley spent 2002-2003 as Georgia Tech’s linebackers coach where he helped the Yellow Jackets to a pair of postseason bowl games. In 2003, he coached a first-team All-ACC performer after Tech’s trio of starting linebackers finished the 2002 season as the team’s top-three tacklers.

Previously, Haley was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Baylor (1999-2001) after coaching outside linebackers for one season each at Clemson (1998) and Houston (1997). The defensive line coach at Troy State from 1994-96, he was promoted to defensive coordinator following the 1996 campaign before leaving for the position at Houston. Haley coached the defensive line at Austin Peay from 1991-93 after starting his college coaching career as a graduate assistant at Arkansas in 1990. His first coaching job was at Enterprise (Ala.) High School in 1989.

The Gadsden, Ala. native played linebacker at Alabama A&M from 1984-88 and was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. He received Alabama A&M’s Inspiration Award in 1987 and was named MVP for the 1988 season. He and his wife, Tina, have three sons: Adrian, A.J. and Jeremy.
