Are the coaches trying to convince themselves that Russell Shepard

I'd much rather have JJ than half the QBs in this league right now. Sure, Tebow is an "SEC QB," and Mallett can really sling it at times, but other than that, most of the QBs in the conference are purely caretakers.

Jevan Snead messes up more than he helps, and the only time his team moves the ball forward is when they give it to McCluster.

Steven Garcia is a dumber version of Chris "Picks" Rix, Joe Cox is equally hated by Georgia fans as Lee is here (which is really hard to do),McElroy, like I said, is a caretaker. Crompton's done ok this year, but really is just a rich man's Jarrett Lee....Um, let's see....Would you rather have Mississippi State's Tyson Lee?

Where are all these great SEC quarterbacks you guys would rather have? Let JJ learn and grow into the position and he'll win us games. Jarrett Lee does absolutely nothing to win us games, and quite often puts in a position to lose.

Shep should have red shirted. He hasnt been a factor, has limited touches, learning virtually nothing as a QB, which he was promised, and I feel we wasted a year of eligibility. He could have used that time to get bigger and stronger while absorbing college life and the college game.

If you dont think he should have been red shirted ask yourself this question. If you were told before the year Shep would avg 3 touches per game and not factor in the outcome of any game, would you have said to play him?

I'm a huge Shepard fan and LOVE to watch him BUT, he is having trouble remembering where HE is supposed to line up at times. Do you think he knows where everyone else is supposed to be at this point?

It's part of the problem. Quarterback has been the other part in 2008 and in 2009. And it goes back to who is not here.

Dismissing Perrilloux put a hole in LSU's quarterback succession forcing us to commit green quarterbacks who were not ready yet the last two years. Neither should have seen the field until they were juniors and they may have turned out to be Matt Flynn types.

Likewise Les had to dismiss five offensive linemen in 2006-2007. It has put a hole in LSU's depth on the line. We have only two seniors and one junior. Behind the upperclassmen we have young linemen that mostly aren't ready yet-- four sophomores and ten freshmen.

The good news is that there has not been any dismissals since Perrilloux. Coaches have to resist the temptation to sign a talented problem child. Better to not sign them and take the next best guy than to have to dismiss them later when it impacts the depth chart.

Agree, Red. Jefferson's progress over the season is more proof that you're correct. What is missing now is Jefferson's timing, and that's why I REALLY hope he's back for the rest of the season. Next year could be a fantastic year for LSU. But Jefferson needs to be a true passing threat.

Right now - Lee looks like a broken man. I feel bad for the kid.

well if so, it may be because of his supporting cast. JJ is a good quarterback, but not a great SEC-caliber QB.

EDIT - i just read the rest of the thread. there really aren't many "SEC-caliber" QBs in the league this season, but that's not entirely what i meant. what about like a QB rated in the top 15-or-so in the country? why can't LSU ever grab a VERY good QB? i really don't remember LSU ever having a really great QB in decades -- or ever. not in my lifetime.

flynn has been the best QB that LSU has had in my lifetime, IMO. russell, davey, jefferson were/are all good (or even "great") quarterbacks, but mostly relied on physical ability rather than a complete package (i.e. brains and intuition to go with the physical attributes.)

If Jefferson is all-SEC we likely win the national championship, just saying.

Besides.. Shepard is not a QB, nor will he ever be at LSU. He's a RB/WR all the way -- and that's who he is practicing with.

It's too early to rule out anything with Shepard. The guy is a freshman and is showing flashes of something special with very limited playing time. Some of those flashes coming from runs at the QB spot.

And with an injury here or there, our QB situation is scary as we saw last night. I'd be teaching him as much as he can learn at QB just in case...
