Was Steele getting fired? To me anyone who is on any staff that takes a job somewhere else is cherry picked.
I went back and looked at the box score of the Orange Bowl game where Steele's defense gave up 70 points. Here is what I discovered: 7 of the points were off of a defensive fumble recovery of 99 yards 14 of the points were off of drives of 18 and 32 yards after turnovers Of the 7 remaining TD's, 6 were 74 yards or less, only one being 80 All of this tells me that the D was on the field a lot and was put into some tough spots.
It is starting to feel like LSU is the dumping ground for fired coaches. Crowton, Cameron, Steele, and Orgeron. One would think they would come "on the cheap" but instead LSU pays them like we had to lure them here. Just kidding, but not like LSU is stealing coaches from other programs lately. That is a bit of a disturbing trend.
He certainly wasn't going to be coaching with Kirby this spring. Now, if he wasn't hired by anyone? I can only guess. When Joe Kines got out of coaching he went to a position with Tide Pride, as I recall. That was primarily due to his time spent in the retirement system of the state. I suspect Steele would follow a similar move.
If I recall, immediately after the 99 yd fuble recovery Clemson muffed the ensuing kickoff and WVU scored almost immediately off of that. Do you blame that score on the defense or a special teams mistake? I also seem to recall that WVU scored something like 24 points in less than 5 minutes.
BTW, in case it's slipped by without being noticed, how many defensive coordinator jobs have we seen change in the last month within the conference? Six? Chavis to A&M. Steele to LSU. Collins to Florida. Arkansas lost their co-defensive coordinator to Florida with Shannon's move. (Smith gets nod as DC) Muschamp to Auburn. Mississippi State hires/re-hires Manny Diaz. Didn't Mizzou change as well?
