Whether you agree with the rule or not, this is the exact scenario for which it was put in place and DB's will draw hankies every time for that hit. They can put that play in the school of officiating on what to look for, if they have such a thing.
I didn't see the play or any replays of it yet, but if I was the DB from La Tech... I'd probably be thinking that if I contact Tolliver, I'm a lot more safe using the crown of my helmet than the facemask if I'm parallel to the ground because my neck could be snapped backwards. If I'm more upright, it'd be safer to lead with my facemask. I'd be worried about my own safety...not about obeying the rules. But I didn't see the hit. Was the defender in an upright position when the hit occurred or what?
It is a dangerous game and I don't agree with excessive rules on the defense. That being said - he speared him. That is just too damn dangerous.
The defender actually went up into TT helmet. It was an obvious missed call. 2 weeks 2 blatant spears missed. Interesting....... This is a really good point. In fact in my drunken screaming during this play I think I said some thing like this.
The defender was upright and went airbourne about 3 yds from TT and met him head on while TT was still in the air. Looked like he led with his forearms simultaneously with the crown of the helmet. He separated TT from the ball in text book fashion. More remarkable was that the defender was a 5'10'' 190 lb freshman. TT is like 6'5'' 210. I wish our young guys were getting coached up like that.
I don't know what kind of coaching you guys had, but not only was it an illegal hit that should have drawn a penalty, it's also dangerous to both players - that's why it's not allowed. I've always coached my kids to play hard but tackle properly for the sake of sportsmanship and following the rules and to keep them from getting head/neck/ spinal injuries. If you can't see the ball carrier at the time you make contact, generally are doing it wrong.
wow sounds like spearing. My point was you gotta protect yourself when hitting and your safety comes first. I don't know techniques at all, but instinct would take over for me, personally, but I'd never try to hurt someones head. It's like a bowl of jello inside a cranium. (in my case...half a bowl sometimes :insane.
First of all, I'll take OUR db's over La Tech's any day of any year, and if our guys were being "coached up" to spear, I wouldn't really like that. It was a straight-up illegal hit, and the reason TT was separated from the ball is because I think he was probably unconscious for a few seconds, so he dropped the ball. It was helmet to helmet contact, and while I don't like a lot of the "excessive" calls going out these days, that was as blatant as they get, and both guys could have been seriously injured. I promise you that "coaching 'em up" does NOT include teaching kids a technique that could break the defender's neck, not to mention what could happen to the wr. Oh, and JL hung TT out to dry on that one...
he didnt put his head down. i think he did what he had to do the make tt drop the ball. he did lead with his arms. but considering how they seemed to be calling it this season (the hit on lafell earlier in the season, UGA?) there should have been a flag. i just dont think it was poor technique or dirty.
