I'm about to retire and I just like being debt-free. I might make more money by buying on margin in the market, too. But I am risk-averse at this point in my life. I've done OK and I don't need to hit a home run, but just keep slapping out base hits.

I just dislike a tax system that penalizes a feller who lives frugally and has no debts.

I can have an opinion on anything I wish.

Of course it does. It contributes to the deficits of the country I live in.

You are the one kissing their ass, not me. Your envy is showing. I don't care if some individual is rich, we all are trying to get rich. I don't care about their financial matters, just their tax rates.

What I care about is fairness among all taxpayers. I don't think it is fair that those whose income is based on investments pays less tax than those whose income is based on salaries or business profits. Why do you defend this?

You remind me of the recess nerds who wouldn't fight anyone but just watched and sang the little "Nyah, nyah" song.

I understand that. But buying on margin and taking a loan on your house at 4% are two very different things. I guess my point is, it's an inflation hedge. Say for the next two years, you just want to be safe and you by AAA bonds or even a mix of munis, treasuries and other very safe bonds. You make no money but in three or four years, interest rates have skyrocketed. You are still borrowing at 4% but now you can safely make 7%-8% in AAA bonds or US treasuries even. That's why I would do it. But the term risk averse is not really something I'm familiar with so I'm different than most people I guess.

Three days to come up with that? C'mon amigo, don't be mad because I made your post? It just become so common that we all knew what was coming anyway.

and oh by the way, all I'm waiting on is a "don't ever speak for me" and I hit the trifecta.:thumb:

None of us are risk-averse when we're 30. When you have four or five decades to recover from a bad investment, you shoot for the moon. When you are 55 and nearing retirement, you tend to eliminate debts and start shifting to safer investments.
