Where did you hear that? Interestingly enough, I've heard from his hosts in the last 24 with no mention of a change in how we are recruiting him.
Never mind...just confirmed it as true...he was told he would have a shot at the tackle position Sunday in his meeting with Shula.
There are a few things that makes me optimistic. 1) you probably saw some of the Auburnites talking about Andre' and his talking to their recruits about Bama. 2) His uncle works with a friend of mine and has said "he's ours to lose for months now. 3) According to a couple of players that hosted him this weekend they said he didn't come across arrogant, didn't seem FOS when talking about playing for the Tide...and gave all indications he'd be wearing Crimson next fall.
Well, a coach can say anything during recruitment and change a player's position later. It happens a lot and recruits know this. It ain't much of a sticking point if you ask me. Nick's policy was to tell a blue chipper that he could play the position he wanted but he would also tell him what position woul dget him more playing time and what position he was most suited for in a potential NFL career. Marcus Spears came out of high scoll as an All-American Tight End, but Nick told him that he was a prototype NFL Defensive end and to consider that NFL Tight Ends make 1.5 Million a year and defensive ends make $4 million . . . of course Spears could try the Tight End spot if he really wanted to. Spears took Nick's advice to his obvious benefit. The Smith kid should listen to Shula, if this is the only thing keeping him from signing. If you don't have both height and quick feet, you can't dominate at tackle in the SEC, much less the NFL. Better to be a dominating guard than an average tackle. Of course Shula could lose the kid, too, if he doesn't allow him a shot at his preferred position. There is still time to influence him after he's in the program.
