This is THE stat in my opinion of why we have looked so dominant the first 3 1/2 games this year.... Stats Third-Down Conversions AU 6 of 17 LSU 5 of 13 Third-Down Conversions KSU 4 of 14 LSU 4 of 6 Third-Down Conversions UAB 5 of 16 LSU 4 of 8 Third-Down Conversions LSU 13 of 19 TCU 7 of 13 Our offense could not sustain drives last night in the 2nd half like we did the 1st three games and that is the only thing that have AU any life. I also noticed that twice late in the 4th Mett threw 2 pass plays on 3rd down and long that were dropped - which killed the clock. Again that should've been a 42-7 type score last night. We must convert 3rd downs against teams with competent offenses or we are going to keep this young defense on the field too long - making too many mistakes.
You're over reading it. It was pretty obvious last night that with the field conditions we went and kind of reverted to the ground and pound to try to eat clock at the end of the game. It was a dumb idea and I hope they see that. We made some big mistakes and we still won by 14.
The threat of rain was well predicted all week long and I think it affected the game plan that Miles and staff prepared. I think that's why we saw last years play calling for Auburn. When we went for the running game over the pass, Auburn went to the stacked box Defense and running was very tough.
Cool stat, Bro! We were #6 in the nation as of last week. We have slipped in this category and that's why this thread is called a "trend." My point is clear: 1st three games was tremendous. Last night we started to revert back to some old habits. Mark my word - if we stay consistent in converting 3rd downs throughout the season at a high percentage - like we did the first 3 games - then we will continue to blow teams out and not have to rely so much pressuring our young Defense to pull out wins for us.
I don't think one game, played in the rain, makes for any kind of trend. And I fully expect for this coaching staff to have this team ready to go Saturday. They know how important moving the chains will be vs UGA. Now, converting third downs at a 60-70% rate vs UGA will be hard. I think second down will be the key down and hopefully we have a bunch of second & 3 or 4 situations where we can throw or pass.
If you think that's bad, THE #1 team in the Nation was 0 for 8 against Colorado St. with 9 minutes left in the 4th.
btw, UCLA is #1 in the Nation on 3rd down conversions. Would you want to trade places? In case you're wondering, they're followed by Georgia Tech, and Washington. Hell Oregon is 6th in the PAC 12 but I'd take that offense over any, including ours. They're skeery. I expect them to be one of the teams in the title game. The other one, I'm thinking us or A&M. I know they lost to Bama- we all know now that it is possible.
Gonna be hard for aTm to be in that game after we beat them. Also, I am not interested in seeing an aTm v. Oregon title game. I can't see aTm making it with their lack of defense anyway.
