I started at LSU in 1969 and we had Golden Girls way back then. Tigerettes, too! Both traveled with Tiger Band - which is why I remember them. I particularly remember a couple of them. Very clearly. With a smile. :geaux:

The earliest of my Gumbo year books I can locate quickly is 1971. See page 330.

Also found this on the LSU BANDS web page: http://www.bands.lsu.edu/golden_girls/index.php

clearly you are right, and they must have done research since I left because during preseason week each year, they show a promotional video to the newbies trying out to make the band and in it said they had only been around since the late 70's early 80's. Or that might have been me taking something offhand from Roy King and misremembering it. :hihi: Maybe it was me remebering the tigerettes fading into oblivion in that era. Either way I stand corrected on that issue but clearly the girls in the pictures are Tigerettes unless the GG's used to care batons.

They still had hairstyles that made them look like grannies.

If she carries a baton (and is dressed in purple & white), she's probably a Tigerette.

If she wears gold, well, then, that's why they call them "Golden Girls"!

Yeah, you're right. Tigerettes started off mostly as "twirlers". Baton twirling seemed to have reached its peak popularity in the 50's and 60's. I have a female cousin the same age as me (born in 1951) who took "twirling" lessons and went on to a glorious career at Texas Tech in their baton squad. Twirlers were held in the same high regard as cheerleaders in our high school days long ago...

Now - as to using the big 'ole flags and banners and such, I think THAT was an 80's thing. At least that's the first time I remember taking note of it.

At any rate, I can still remember the Tiger Stadium announcer introducing "The Golden Band from Tigerland, the Tigerettes, and The Golllllllddddeeeen Giiiirrlllsss.....(echo, echo echo) - and then : PREGAME! I don't think I'll ever forget that feeling as we stepped off for Pregame. I hope not. :geaux:
