I dont think he's a 'problem'. I do think he holds the ball a little too long at times and won't throw it unless his received it WIDE open. He's learning. I would like to see the coaching staff give him a little more responsibility and let him make some decisions without always looking to the sideline. D played outstanding. I attribute that solely on Chavis' years of playing against Richt's O when he was at Tenn. Hopefully the same will hold true next week against FU. We'll need a similar effort even if Tebow doesn't play.
Biggest lesson that Jordan needs to take away from this game is how much more successful he is when he gets rid of it quickly. We did absolutely nothing in the second half until he began doing just that. It almost seemed like he was trying to do too much and, as a result, held onto the ball entirely too long.
He's still got some learning/improving to do but his numbers today were very good, not TD's but his passing completions. He completed a higher percentage of passes than Cox. He does need to take a more shallow track on the option and make a defender commit before pitching but I'm sure he knows this and just needs the game to slow down a bit. This was a HUGE game in a hostile environment, a far cry from USL at home. I believe he'll be very special but boy O boy I love watching the Shep play. That guy is going to be something. R. Randel too.
I have complained about the play calling all year long. Today, JJ made poor decision after poor decision. Ran the option into the ground at least 3 times. Holding onto the ball way too long in the pocket and got sacked when the ball should have been thrown or thrown away. I believe had JJ thrown a TD instead of a pick in that first possession, LSU would have won 41-7. After the interception the staff pulled back the reins for the next 2 and half quarters (until we fell behind, basically). It hurt JJ's confidence to go back to the running game so much and play so safely especially when we got closer in scoring range. By the time the 3rd quarter came around, he stood little chance to succeed. But when we needed him in the 4th, he came through someway somehow. And hats off to the young man. He showed a lot of poise and guts out there. It was nice to see. I think it's a stepping stone for him in his progression. We need him to be confident going into Florida, and I think we actually achieved that after that 88 yard drive.
You know, those are good points. I did not associate the interception with more conservative play calling, but perhaps that was it. JJ looks horrible running the option, b/c it is not natural for him. He is a true passer. They (meaning the coaches) need to have more confidence in him. The offense went into hibernation for awhile after dominating the first 1.5 qtrs.
Pointing out the obvious is not the same is wishing they would lose. I actually pointed out many good points this week, mostly in the first half. I felt like they played LSU football for almost 3 quarters tonight.... which is an improvement. I think it was good win even though they almost blew it. At least they were playing LSU football. Back on topic, with that said, I have seen no improvement in JJ and actually regression in the option game by JJ. His option play has actually been quite bad the last 2 weeks. I am actually encouraged by LSU tonight, I still remain suspect on JJ just like I said in July and August.... that doesn't mean he can't improve.
