First of all - I said right up front that this was just for fun (i.e. I didn't claim it was analysis). So you can all chow my hawg. (I'm kidding . I just haven't said that in a while...:grin I did not infer that it's not a big deal. In fact, I made sure to mention it, in an otherwise very short post, to verify that I acknowledge it as a very real input, but... IN MY OPINION Rivals and Scout, who do claim to perform ANALYSIS, should be able to do better. If this was a random assignment of stars, or even one done by amateurs like us, then I'd say statistics are useful. But these recruits are not all equal, nor are they given equal analysis by the sites, so treating them equally for statistical analysis is folly. Besides, all you non-ignorant folks are statistically analyzing MY OPINION, which was offered just for FUN! Now, if you have a different OPINION, that's cool.
I agree. Too bad that wasn't my point... The star ratings are an indication of potential success by analysis of past performance and some measurables. IN MY OPINION... They should be more correct about 5 Stars than 2 Stars. 5 Stars get more looks, more film time, more visits, more camps... You pay them to sift the 2 Stars from the 3, 4 and 5 Stars. If they can't do that at a higher rate than picking 5 Stars, then I say they aren't giving you your money's worth. Again - see my very first statement - it's a single list, in a single year, and the list is highly subjective and depends on overall team performance and TV exposure. So, it's not analysis. It is just interesting, at least to me.
I'm missing something. What article - SabanFan quoted my post...I think... I'm friggin' confused...
Every year, there are a few 5 stars that I disagree on. Considering that it is only about 30 players rated that highly every year, people should basically be unanimous on them. There should be no doubt that they will be great players... Also, considering how many 5 stars have been busts due to character-issues, I think that should be a part of the analysis as well. I see far too many 5 star guys who are all potential, and who will either end up being all-world or nothing. These guys usually impress you with their highlight ability & measurements, but aren't consistent & don't know the position very well. Keiland Williams & Terrance Toliver are examples of this. USC has lots of examples. And I also dislike that they have to have a white poster-boy as a 5 star QB every single year.
My mistake, I thought there was a link to an article in your post... so I guess I was talking about you.
I agree. It is always nice to recruit those 4 and 5 star prospects, but the evaluation process is far from perfect. I personally suspect the evaluation processes used by coaches tend to be more reliable. But that is just a feeling I have and is not based on anything.
