I saw a great movie this weekend with the little one that I think maybe some of you might want to check out. It's a cartoon, but it still teaches an important lesson: Stop freaking out folks. If Flynn leaves for another school, then MIles will have to sign two QB's next year. If he doesn't and Russell goes down, then Perrilloux starts we're in trouble anyway. If Perrilloux goes down, Cate isn't going to step in and make this team a winner. You let Early line up at QB and he hands the ball off to Alley and JV or runs it himself. This team will have bigger problems to deal with than losing a marginally talented QB halfway through the recruiting season. Besides, after the way we stole RP from Texas last year, I'd say we're due for some bad karma. Let's go ahead and get it out of the way now with Tebow...
I think you are overreacting a bit KTeam. I am sorry to burst your bubble of disillusion, but 5 Stars do not "beat down the doors" of LSU . The only schools sell themself like that are the ones that are not only national contenders, but have a location that sells itself. Like it or not, we are not USC, Miami, or one of those schools that not only have a tradition of NC, but also a great location. We have to sell ourself to them. I do not think that this decommit indicates a "crack in the dam". I think it was more a combination of him realizing that he would have to wait a much longer time to see the feild here than in stillwater and LSU also looking at other options at QB. I have heard stuff here recently that Cate was told that he would be the only QB we bring in this year. I have a hard time beleiveing that he was told exactly that. I think that, if anything, he was told that he would probably be the only QB brought in. If he decommited because we showed interest in Tebow, a QB that most people would say has us third on his list if anything, then i don't want him. Like i said though, i don't think that was the deciding factor. I think that, more likley than not, he just saw a chance to start sooner at OSU. I wish him the best of luck there. I don't think that we NEED a QB in this class. It would be nice, but its not a class breaker.
Agreed, Wolf. Besides, all Miles has to do is sign the best athletes that Louisiana produces every year for a Top 5 class anyway people. If LSU keeps winning, state pride will keep the Marshall Faulk and Kordell Stewarts from running off to other schools.
I hear what you're saying. You're right, getting what would amount to a 4th-string QB for '06 isn't something to be all "gloom-n-doom" about that he's not coming. If next year's class can't sign a QB, then there may be cause for some concern, but not now. We have far too many holes to fill at different positions for next season--mainly offensive linemen and linebackers. Signing a QB in this class would be a gift....laginappe if you will. But we dont' "need" a QB commitment until next year. Having said that, I would like to just say that I think you're being a little harsh labeling Cate "marginally talented". The kid can play. And he will be a starter before his playing days are up. Just doesn't look like it'll be here.
Brock Berlin was marginally talented just like Cate. Both stood off the line of scrimmage behind good lines and just threw the ball. We all know how Berlin turned out and he was the greatest thing since Jacob's Andouille. A QB is more than someone who throws the ball downfield. Granted I have never seen Cate play, so I won't be one of those people who acts like he knows what he is talking about regardless. However this guy was on no one's radar until LSU offered him. If anything that is what boosted his status. LSU wouldn't have offered him if he wasn't worthy , right? We'll see...
Without a good QB prospect this year, it will add undue stress on the staff next year to make sure we pull in another great one. Just look at teams this year that went from a senior QB last year to a freshman or sophmore this year and you can easily see why you should not have any gaps in recruiting especially at the QB position.
First of all, when the top QB prospect in the country says he'd like to vist...what is the coaching staff suppose to say...NO, sorry Tim we've got Alex Cate....PLLLLEEAAAASSSSEEE! As much as I'd love to see Tim Tebow as an LSU Tiger I don't think it's in the cards. He can go to Bama and play right away. Here he'll sit behind JR and RP and we'll have a long time to wait to play. Alex Cate wasn't going to see the field at LSU any time soon and I don't think it's that big of deal that we don't sign a QB in this class anyway.
Besides him being the top QB in teh country, wanting to visit..for whatever reason..which will look good natioanlly...this documentary he is filming is on ESPN. Basically, when the segment runs it will be a nationally televised promo for LSU..they're going to follow him around the facilities, have the coaches talking about it, get to show off our stadium and how loud and impressive it is (he was there for AU game). Basically, how could they say no to a big ass ESPN informercial for LSU?
Actually this is incorrect, Cate had over 30 offers before he committed to LSU. However, I'm not sure LSU would have benefitted in the long run by signing him. His father is an interesting character... Cate was ready to jump to Okie St. apparently because LSU allowed 1 QB to take an "Official" visit for that documentary thing..why didn't Cate know this? Everyone who follows recruiting does. With this latest episode, makes you wonder if Cate would have transferred anyway.
oh well he should have a way better time in stillwater anyway....they are doing some good things up there....not!
