I think it's very unethical for high school coaches to try to decide where their players go. My dad was a high school coach for over 30 years, and we entertained weekly calls (when dad had a blue-chipper--and they don't come along all the time) from Charlie Mac, Pat Dye, Terry Donohue, Lou Holtz, and many others. Still, Dad didn't tell his players where to go. It's really none of the coach's business.
Since your Dad knew the college coaches and something about their programs did he try to advise a player about where he would best fit in even if he didn't try to steer a player to a particular program?
Actually there was no retraction. And that's because there was never a commitment in the first place. It was all rumor that leaked out and now he has squashed it. Texas leads. LSU is still in the running. He is coming to LSU this week for camp. End of story. Supposedly this is what he said: "If I go to LSU, it will be a plus for them but if I go to Texas it will be a great opportunity." Take it for what it's worth.
Did you read the Times Picayune this morning? His high school coach said Ryan called him to get the phone number of the Texas coaches so that he could commit to them. Ryan called and commited to the offensive coordinator because Mack was away. Then the coach said Ryan received an email from Mack Brown welcoming him to the family. Now I know this high school coach doesn't have a good track record with LSU but to make that story up would require quite an imagination. I have no idea where he will end up but I call this a commitment to Texas and then a retraction to avoid the heat for now.
Do you think that a recruit of his magnitude would commit to an offensive coordinator? And that Mack Brown's official first response to this would be in the form of a frickin email? There goes the validity of that article.
So are you saying the high school coach is making this story up? Mike S interviewed the coach with similar responses on Tigerbait. The Times Pic story was done by Bill Bumgarner.
