Did Vilma only have a 1 year deal? If so, yeah they need to re-sign him.

Dumping Smith and Grant would be a nice touch. THose 2 guys are just a waste of space and money.

I think we lose our #1 pick if we re-sign him before the start of free agency. If I recall correctly, we have to attempt to sign him as an UFA. I think he'd like to return to the Saints but it will cost us.

If the Saints do keep him and maintain their #1 in the draft, they can add a top S or LB which would be an instant upgrade. Our defense doesn't need to be awesome next year...just good enough to slow our opponents down and reduce the scoring slightly from last year. That in itself should be enough to make the playoffs next year.

That's great! I'm not an eternal optimist for the Saints but I really don't think they're that far from contention. If Loomis can make a few good off-season moves...watch out!

That's what I originally thought but saw soemthing different when looking at projections on a few sites.

Either way it appears they'll need to let him hit the open market and then re-sign him. They need him but can't afford to give up another draft pick as they're already short a few.

Its a 2nd if they sign him before FA. since they gave the Giants the 2nd for Shockey it becomes a 1st round pick if the sign him before FA starts.
