The Saints have had great offenses and the Saints have had great defenses...just never at the same time. Right now they need to stand pat on offense and draft/acquire nothing but D and special teamers.

I have proclaimed this...thus it shall be.

Then the defense will be coming around just as the offense starts to slip...and around we go.

We have a 3 year window when Drew Brees' contract runs out.

This is it. I hated wasting the past 2 years.

The Saints cannot draft defense and wait til it matures. We need it now in draft day trades and free agency acquisitions.

Vilma was a great start. Now let's finish it.

Get rid of your free safeties. Please dear God. Both are useless.

Unfortunately the Saints only have a 1st, two 4ths and a 7th round pick this year. The 3rd round pick will be surrendered to the Jets based on Vilma's performance in 2008. A 2nd and 5th round pick was wasted on Shockey.

So here is what the Saints need to do:
    1) Get a really good veteran corner via free agency to go with the other young corner.
    2) Get an impact OLB. This I would not mind drafting. Someone like Curry or Spikes in the first round. One will be available.
    3) We need a horse for short yardage/goal line and controlling time of possession. PJ Hill or Beanie Wells will likely be gone by the 4th round.
    4) Get a quality free safety from free agency.
    5) Get a legit DC in here that can make it happen NOW.

All I am asking is for the defense to hold it's opponents to 16-18 ppg, ala the 1999 Super Bowl Champion St. Louis Rams. If the Saints can start to cause turnovers, the offense all of sudden goes from 27-28 ppg to 31-32 ppg.

saints first and foremost need to break out the bank for one jonathan vilma. give him the checkbook and the pen and let him put whatever number is his favorite.

second thing is cut grant and possibly smith to free up some cash for the draft and try to get some picks. these 2 guys are the epitome of underachieving. at least aaron brooks was indifferent even before he got paid. these 2 are m.i.a. 2 of 3 sundays. maybe greg robinson can change this?

3rd. trade down and get all the damn picks you can possibly acquire on defense. and dont forget one starting running back.

while trading down, be sure to include reggie bush in the mix to entice offers. in a package deal with a 4th rounder, you'd be sure to get a 1 and a 2 from some dumbass team like the raiders or lions.

be sure to add will smith or grant in the offers before their outright release. you can never underestimate the ignorance of the matt millen's of the world that are still out there.

Brandon Jacobs is an UFA. If not, draft PJ Hill.

Jacobs will require too much money. That's out of the question, even though he would be my #1 pick.

I agree with Tirk, trade Grant (although he might have a no trade clause, if so shame on Payton/Loomis). If you can't trade him, outright release him and get someone who actually wants to put forth the effort to make this team better.

I think we need Smith. He at least will put pressure on the passer. With an actual DC that has a clue how to disguise blitzes and creates stunts, Will Smith's sack total could easily surpass 12 this upcoming season.

    Don't forget about Smith too.

I hope I never see them two bastards in a Saints uniform again.

That being said, they will both be on the team next year! :dis:

absolutely. jacobs is adding some miles and will be overly expensive. rb's cost too much. get one in the draft but do some actual scouting.
almost zero chance you could trade grant at his current salary. But id try like for the hell of it.

i actually think grant and smith may arrive under an aggressive dc but im just ready to move on without them. im like a scorned woman. but if i must, Id take smith.
