Stats so far this year: 45.0 Avg. 6 punts went for 50 or more yards 3 were fair caught 0 were touch backs 8 were inside the 20 A long of 60 yards I'll take these stats......didn't get any notice before the year, but every team knows him now.
I don't know if this has been discussed but a question came up the other night when my uncle and I were watching the game with my brother: So, why can't Wing, who consistently nails it every time he punts, not be our kick-off guy as well? Is there some rule that says he can't do it? I just wonder how a kid can have the talent to hold the ball and drop it then kick it with his foot but can't nail it off a tee.
The diffrence in the really big games , where two teams are equally matched on offense and defense, is the field position battle. The special teams play, both returning the ball for favorable field position or pinning the opposing team deep in their territory, tends to decide the outcome of the game. All night long when lsu needed to have a good punt, wing stuck wvu deep in their own territory. Because of this, tm7 was able to deflect and intercept the deflection and return it to the one yard line. This set up a pivotal score. When we were on our heels, mo returned a kickoff and put the tigers back firmly in control. This was another game changing event. Things like this make the diffrence in ball games. When we play Florida and auburn , the special teams play will be important. The most important will be aginst the game with the gumps. Lsu and bama are evenly matched on offense and defense. For us to win we will need that little something extra. That something extra will be our ability to pin bama back deep in their territory. Our special teams may win that game for us. For tiger fans special teams play is nothing new, remember pp7 taking it to the house last year and the bounce fake that put us in position to win in Florida? I see the same special teams play getting lsu to it's third national championship in 9 years. Geaux tigers.
This guy is amazing! Right now I put him up their with TM7, Ford/Ware, RR ect. as one our biggest weapons. My only concern with him is he looks a little fragile. Dude needs to stay away from any contact and just kick.
I dont understand why they are so hung up on the 4 turnovers, they were within 6 points after 3. They have many other things to fix besides the issues with the turnovers. DH needs to grow up if he wants to play with the big boys
The angled punts were a thing of beauty. He controls the ball like few punters I have ever seen. It's hard to think a punter could be a difference maker but if we had to go with our backup punter, I'm not convinced we win this game. It would have been as much as a 20 yard difference in field position (and that's not really counting the returns that could have occurred from short line drive punts). Austin could have had an even bigger night that could have spelled our doom.
