Herbie did say something to this effect near the end of the broadcast (when no one was watching, I'm sure).
For those who were wondering -- Brent Musburger is an alumni of Northwestern. He may have gotten so used to seeing PAC-to schools beating Big Ten teams that his judgment is skewed. As to how "great" USC is because in the last three years they beat the Big Ten runner-up Michigan by 14 points, the Big Ten runner-up llinois by 32 points and the Big Ten co-champion by 14 points, for a three game average of 20 points. In the mean time an SEC school beat the Big Ten champion for the BCS title by 27 points, an SEC team beat the Big Ten Champion by 14 points for the BCS title for a two game average of 20.5 points. We will see what Texas does to the Big Ten runner-up in a couple of days. But note the SEC and Big 12 are beating Big Ten champs and USC is having to settle for seconds to prove their greatness. End of game: Pete Carroll. With all due respect I don't think anyone in the country can beat us. Herbie: USC needs to be beat on the field. Fellas, Oregon State did that this year. Maybe next year it will be Washingto State.
I'm gonna call B.S. on this ****. Penn State fans are the biggest claimers of moral victories of any fanbase in any sport whatsoever. You can't talk to a Penn State fan for five minutes about their program until they start rattling off the number of undefeated seasons they've had. They didn't win anything for them, but man are they proud of them like Nat'l Championships.
Pride is one thing. Treating them like Nat'l Championship seasons is another. It's a moral victory. Auburn did it and was mocked for it and rightly so.
Um, just like Nebraska should have been playing PSU for the NC in 1994, so should have Auburn against USC in 2004. Everyone knows it.
Nope, the worst had to have been Keith Jackson calling the 2004-season Rose Bowl, "the people's championship" as he called the bowl in 2003. Pretty sure they caught him on tape rubbing his nipples every time he talked about Matt Leinart. "Whoooaaa nellie!"
I am getting so tired of hearing this bull chyt every year. I am going to boycott ESPN for a year. Well maybe a month like in February.
Last night, USC's "Great" defense got gashed a lot by Penn State running backs. Their secondary got gashed by the Penn State receivers. Penn State was in a position to get within a touchdown with about 9 minutes left. USC's offense played well in the first half...well enough to win. They scored one TD in the second. USC is very good. But, would the beat any team in the country right now. I seriously doubt it. #1, I don't think so. Incidently, USC is classless, dancing on the sidelines in the first half as though the game was over. Penn State made it respectable and had a pretty good chance in the end. This was not a blow out as the media will try to portray.
About half of JoPa's wins and most of his undefeated seasons happened when Penn State was the only eastern team that was worth a plug nickel. They'd get fat feasting on teams with no real blue chippers among their recruits. Back then you couldn't get PSU south of the Mason Dixon line to strap it up against a southern team. Paterno knew they'd be exposed.
