The defense came out extremely flat on Saturday. After a few futile series on defense, LSU made adjustments.....from attacking, to containing Manziel. It totally worked, and LSU's D took over the game. The adjustment they made was one that is usually effective against a dangerous running quarterback. My question is: Why wouldn't they have started the game playing a defense that usually works against such an offense? What was their original defensive game plan? What were they trying to do?
The original defense lsu started with is their base defense a 4-3 very effective against the run and pass rush on the passing game....how ever when atm came out with 4 and 5 wide it forced us to send one backer in the slot and play a zone defense, but because atm was getting the ball out so quick to the reciever who had the biggest cushion from a d-back it forced chief to go to a 3-4-2 with 3 lineman and 4 linebackers which is more of a nickel package which put faster guys and spread 4 linebackers out to easier cover the 4 and 5 wide without having to sit in a zone. and the 4 backers could still react to the run game.
We actually chased him around, more than working on containment, after the first two series. When we were containing him, he still had time to find receivers. After we moved to 3 down linemen, we have more guys covering receivers, which gave our big, fast guys a chance to chase Manziel around. Chavis defenses often get their game legs under them in the first couple of series and adjust on the fly.
Hats off to Chavis and staff for making the correct adjustments and helping the team get another "W" versus an SEC opponent and one step closer to another SEC championship.
I didn't think they bring in another lb, thought they brought in another safety, Micah Eugene. Chavis did this a lot last year too, you are right it essentially is nickel. That's why you would see Taylor and Reid, Mathieu, Simon or Brooks, and Claiborne on the field at once. Damn what a defensive backfield.....
When they went with three down linemen and six defensive backs, they became a lot faster team. Manziel had no one to throw to and no where to run.
Yes. That is a typical effective defense against a running quarterback. Why didn't we start the game with this?
That's the defense against the spread set.....I think chief thought he could get to the recievers with a 4-3 package but when he saw that a&m was taking to short throws to the reciever that had the biggest cushion he had to play more of a bump and run with zone coverages...and that's where the smaller faster athlete's came in to play, they had to be able to cover in space.
