I am watching the florida lsu game from 89. The defense looks pretty good so far. I know they end up losing, but it got me wondering. What happened with that team? I know they started off highly ranked, so they must have had alot of returning starters and letterman. Yes, I know archer was the coach, but did this team under achieve or where they just not that good.maybe they had a couple early losses and it snowballed from there. Just wondering. I was only 8 back then and I went to my first game that year. It was against miami of ohio. They looked real good in that one lol.
Mike Archer was the only coach that let racial disharmony exist on the team and it fractured it. In the 70's it was a mostly white team with some black players. The last decade was mostly a black team with some white players. But in the late-80's, the team was about 50/50. Archer allowed racial cliques to develop and persist and failed to rid himself of a few troublemakers. The team was badly undisciplined and divided. Curley Hallman brought in some discipline and a lot of new players, he recruited fairly well. But the man didn't know a football from an armadillo.
Thanks for the reply red. Seems like Archer was just in over his head at the time. And correct about hallman recruiting some good players. 1995 was when i really got into LSU football. There were a lot of good players on that team that hallman recruited. They were a better team than 7-4-1 if you ask me. They definitely shouldn't have lost to Kentucky that year. People complain about Jordan Jefferson, but you have never seen bad QB play until you have seen Melvin Hill in that game!!!
