Retire it... After Mathieu no one will do #7 any justice.

I missed the announcement that said 7 was to be passed down or awarded to a certain player the way 18 has.

We didn't have one last year either if I remember correctly as well. In the same way that Mathieu wore it so well, he also tarnished it too that they may have decided to stop the tradition. I would have liked to have kept it going but mostly because I have a #7 jersey at home...

The same could have been said of Bert Jones and Patrick Peterson as well.

Yeah, IMO, Pat Pete & Mathieu are the two best players we've ever had. Seems like we should just shelve it after that pair of legends donned it.

Didn't a LB have it last year?

While I agree those 2 names are great... neither changed the dynamic of the game like Mathieu did. Imo... the greatest player to ever put on a college uniform. Just glad he was a Tiger.

I figure we'll have a few more top-tier CBs worthy of #7. For ex, had we not had TM7, Claiborne would have worn it well. We have some very talented young CBs coming up, including the Jalens.

For ex, USC has a tradition of giving #55 to their star LB. Started with Junior Seau and three other top-10 picks in the NFL Draft have worn it since...but none of them were anywhere as close as great at Seau. And, Pete Carroll had, at times, refrained from assigning the number if he did not think any player was worthy of it. Currently, a junior is wearing it that has started every year he's been on campus since coming out of high school as a Parade All-American, US Army All-American, etc

I suspect that the coaches want to keep "handed-down" numbers limited to #18. It could really get out of hand.
