Accountability and Responsibility. As we all know, this situation with the LSU Offense has been going on for three seasons now. I knew that losing Ryan P would set back our QB/Offense a bit, but, to be set back for three full seasons is profoundly disturbing to me. I'm unable to easily overlook the problem for such a length of time by viewing our overall success during this time. That would be like winning sea battles but overlooking the fact that one of my ships routinely wasted all of its cannon balls by shooting high or low. The Captain of that errant ship is responsible for the gunnery proficiency of his crew. I must hold that Captain accountable for his failure to train his gunners, despite that fact that I've lost only two battles out of ten. If I ignore this deficiency and allow this Captain to continue (perhaps because I like him personally, or maybe he's my brother-in-law), that makes me just as guilty of Dereliction of Duty as the Captain. Are there some people in the LSU football organization who are somewhat like that Admiral Fleet Commander who gives that sub-standard Captain a pass?
Squandered season? You do know that we won 10 games, right? I know you do because you put it in your post. How in the hell is winning 10 games and beating FU and the Gumps along the way a 'squandered season? Explain that one to the group.
i'm going to give him/her the benefit of the doubt, and say that the comment was referring to the pitiful passing game. but I agree, squandered season is a little overboard. Ask Florida, USC, Texas, Georgia, Alabama fans, if they would like to be 10-2 right now. Texas isn't going to a bowl game this year..... holy cow..... Just think of what the climate would be in Baton Rouge, had Les Miles made the national championship game, and lost, then turned around the next season and only won 5 games.....
But let's put in in better context . . . Zach Mettenberger has thrown for 31 touchdowns and 3 interceptions this season and 193 yards a game.
To be fair to Jarrett Lee, even though he was terrible for most of the season, that 1 touchdown was huge.
That's because Lee, for all his physical capabilities, has terrible, terrible footwork. He needs to be able to make minimal drops, plant his feet, and get rid of the ball quickly. When he does that, he is money. When he has to make a five step drop and read the field, his feet start bouncing around all over the place, and he never regains his balance. That's why he makes those ugly, backfoot throws that generally get picked. Jefferson, on the other hand, has good footwork. So good, in fact, that he can't produce without it (or so he thinks). He has to make big drops or play from the shotgun. He needs to run around for a few seconds and let the play develop. That's why he's a downfield threat. But, he cannot plant quickly and make a throw. That's why he struggled so epically for the first 3/4 of the season. They tried to mold a conservative gameplan around him, consisting of short, quick throws. Well, he just can't make those types of throws. Lo and behold, when they "opened it up" in the bama game, dude was a new quarterback. They really should bring Drew Brees in this spring and teach these guys a couple of things about footwork. Or maybe just enroll them in some tennis lessons.
More context.....Jefferson and Lee were facing SEC defenses, Mettenberger was lighting it up against JuCos. Not one of your better efforts, Red, but wth, Peyton Manning threw 4 picks this week.
