Don't like it... Would I be able to pay it and keep driving, yes probably. As for those poor unfortunates that couldn't afford it, never fear, the government (we) could start subsidizing that like they (we) do food, rent, cell phones, telephones, healthcare, yadda yadda yadda... So no, I'm not in favor of it. Gradual increase or not, it's ridiculous in my humble opinion.
yesterday during one of the few times i was able to log in from my phone, i read this thread but was unable to reply. because a lot (and i mean A LOT) of the replies say the same as what i think, i'll only say this..... ARE YOU FREAKIN CRAZY???
:thumb: Yep...you'll pay more than $7 (directly or indirectly) in order to help pay for someone else who in all likelihood will vote for the idiots who initiated the hike. NO...NO...NO...HELL NO! I'm tired of government cheese being used to buy votes. I'm also tired of the lack of accountability, lack of responsibility, and the constnt blaming of others for your faults.
Trucks deliver probably 95% of every product. How does Wal-Mart's good get to them? by train? no...by truck Walgreens? truck milk? truck (i used to deliver this) Coke? truck water? truck gas? truck (also delivered this)
i am not proposing that we tax gas at all. i am asking gumborue why he would subsidize the trucking industry with tax dollars while raising oil prices. if you want to subsidize trucking, you could simply lower the taxes nd pay the trucks directly with the taxes you saved instead of foiltering it through wasteful government bureaucracy.
Under Bush a gallon of regular went from $1 to $4 at the peak, now down to $2.50 in the great recession due to reduced activity. Oil is about $80 a barrel, up from 30 in 2000, down from 150 in 2007. I like Boone Pickens when it comes to talking oil, he's about as correct and straight a shooter as there is. When asked if we are running out of oil, he said "No, we're running out of $50 a barrel oil." There is a lot of oil left, just in harder and harder places to get to and get the oil out of. Like the tar sands up in Canada (that requires energy to heat water to separate the oil from the sand, and its heavy oil, not light sweet crude), or shale rock where the rock has to be broken and steam used to force the oil out of the pores. When asked if we'll see 100, 200 and 300 dollar a barrel oil, Boone said, yes, yes, yes, and $400 a barrel oil. We have to get off it. PickensPlan: The Plan
the whole idea is to limit demand. if you increase the price less, demand is higher. i dont know why the $ would have to go thru gov. truckers (who i think are mostly independent) can just get subsidies through tax credits. but i get that you (and many others, no surprise) dont like the idea of artificially induced $7/gal gas, and i think i get why. you very well may be right. it is not a simple solution and it is not a simple problem. the scary part is the possibility that society may not be able to find cheap enough fuel alternatives fast enough. since its oil is known to be a finite resource and we are only using more of it. seems reasonable to curb use by taxes and use the money to fund a space race mission to find suitable alternatives.
Nice! Try to get another slam in on Bush. The stock market also reached a record high with Bush in office. It's not doing so well now with Obama. Oh, I forgot. IT'S BUSH'S FAULT! How much would gas cost if every hypocrite liberal would stop using it?
The facts are the facts. You guys seem to try and blame Obama for everything happening in the world today, as though there has been no history and nothing preceded him. It's not true. History counts also, people have had an opportunity to develop an energy policy in this country since Gerald Ford and the first oil embargo back in 1973, but we import more oil today as a percent of our needs than we did back then. And it's not close.
