Jay Ratliff (303 lbs) was a 4-time Pro Bowler as an NT in a 3-4 defense ... and he played in a 4-3 defense at Auburn

Kyle Williams (303 lbs) was a 2-time Pro Bowler as an NT in a 3-4 defense ... and he played in a 4-3 defense at LSU

Glenn Dorsey (297 lbs) -- could he be a Pro Bowler as an NT in a 3-4 defense?

Not a good signing by the 49ers.

He will be overpowered playing NT in a 3-4.

    At least they didn't overpay.

Since your 'thing' is looking up and posting stats, why don't you post Dorsey's since he's been in the NFL. If you do, I'm sure they'll point out that he either hasn't adapted to the 3-4 or he was overrated coming out of college. I choose to believe the former. Put him where he's comfortable and lets see if the Dorsey we saw at LSU emerges.

If not, then there will be no more excuses and I guess he'll be considered a bust, which is hard to imagine given how dominant he was while he was here.

The best stat gurus in the business, PFF, say that the stats show that both Dorsey and Tyson Jackson are superstars with the Chiefs...

    https://www.profootballfocus.com/bl...kson-and-glenn-dorsey-des-kansas-city-chiefs/

Basically, it's like i and some of those 49er fans were saying before, the Chiefs use them as two-gap space eaters...
instead of having then shoot one gap between D-lineman and causing havoc in the backfield, the Chiefs have them sit there and occupy two gaps...the gap on each side of the D-lineman in front of them....defending any run that comes through either of those gaps while tying up the D-lineman in front of them, clearing the gaps for the LBs to make plays

    As that article points out:

While much of the league has been trending toward penetrating, aggressive defensive fronts, with more 3-4 defenses playing one-gap fronts, the Chiefs have maintained an old-school two-gap defense. This won’t surprise anybody who watched the way the Patriots played defense under Crennel...
The Patriots used to have big, stout two-gapping defensive linemen and then relied on the linebackers behind them to make plays, and the Chiefs today have been doing a pretty good job of emulating that defense.
New England had Ty Warren, who was for years one of the best run-stuffing 3-4 DEs as the lynchpin of that defense. It allowed their linebackers to make a name for themselves because they rarely had to deal with bodies coming at them. The Chiefs have been trying to get that kind of play from Dorsey and Jackson, and recently it has been working. As such, you have seen Pro-Bowl caliber seasons from Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson, as well as impressive and promising performances from Justin Houston. Though often lost in coverage, even Jovan Belcher has been able to string together consistently strong play against the run because of the play in front of him.
    ...
As a rookie, (Dorsey) defended the run well, and with the exception of a slump in his second season, has graded increasingly well in that area
    ...
Jackson struggled much more than Dorsey early on, grading abysmally as a rookie in all areas with a -40.9 overall mark. However, in his second season he was above average as a run defender and last season he had completed a similar improvement as his teammate, with a (excellent) +10.0 grade against the run.
    ...
In addition to tackles, we record defensive stops–tackles for an offensive failure on the play–and looking at those stops collected on run plays, Jackson and Dorsey each accounted for more than any other 3-4 end… including All-World stud, Justin Smith. Jackson tallied 38 while Dorsey earned 32 himself as they led the NFL at their position, and Jackson also led the league in Run Stop frequency.
    ...
Though neither Glenn Dorsey nor Tyson Jackson will ever be redeemed in the eyes of some people who care only about the sack stats, they have developed into two of the best run-stuffing defensive linemen in the NFL. That is why they are Kansas City’s Secret Superstars.

    So much fail here.

First, as already pointed out: Jay Ratliff (303 lbs) was a 4-time Pro Bowler
as an NT in a 3-4 defense ... and he played
in a 4-3 defense at Auburn
Kyle Williams (303 lbs) was a 2-time Pro
Bowler as an NT in a 3-4 defense ... and he
played in a 4-3 defense at LSU

You can add Ricky Jean Francois (295 lbs), who did so well as both NT and DE with the 49ers that he is now getting paid starter money (4 year deal with Colts...for 5.63 million/year), and he played in a 4-3 at LSU

Second, multiple accounts have Dorsey as much bigger than the 300 lbs he is listed at

Third, with the 49ers, unlike with the Chiefs, Dorsey will have the opportunity to play a variety of new roles....his natural 4-3 DT spot as well as a one-gap attacking 3-4 NT and DE

Fourth, the 49ers D is outstanding, and is stacked with Pro Bowlers, which will take a ton a pressure off Dorsey (won't be able to double team him or game plan around him as easily)...and it also shows that the 49ers have the best staff in the business at getting the most out of their players on defense

    Kyle Williams - 5th R
    Jay Ratliff - 7th R
    RJF - 7th R

    Dorsey on visit to 49ers:

When he found out the 49ers were interested
in bringing him for a visit, the former LSU
    standout...made
sure it was his first and only trip.
Dorsey packed up his belongings in less than
an hour and headed to the airport. He
landed in the Bay Area late Tuesday night
and met with coaches and members of the
    front office at midnight.

“It was awesome,” the 6-foot-1, 297-pound
defensive lineman said of his first meeting
with Harbaugh at 49ers headquarters. “He’s
full of energy...He’s fired up and I am too.”

“I was blown away,” Dorsey said
of his first impression of 49ers
    headquarters.

Dorsey came back to the facility early
Wednesday and met up with veterans
    working out

“It’s a different attitude around here,”
Dorsey said. “Guys are in here are ready to
work hard and I’m just thankful...to be a part of it”

    “I’m excited,” Dorsey said. “You
can’t deny that they’re great football
    players. ... I’m happy..to come in
    and be with those guys.”

"I’m ready,” he said, wearing a red 49ers
    ball cap.

“I’m thankful,” Dorsey said. “I feel
    like I can...step my
game up to a new level.”

    “I’m glad,” he said.

    “I’m thankful ... This
    is a great organization ...
I’m just ready to get in and
    ..do my work.”
