Well for the record I am not a star guy. I find this whole recruiting ranking thing absurd to say the least. Just looking at our 5*s over the years and our 3 stars proves to me that whole thing is pointless. Specifically some of our best players were 2 stars and our 5 star busts are well documented. I remember how excited I was we got Shepard.. Pfffttttttt. Nice kid, good Tiger not exactly the "percy harvin" we had all hoped for.... Never again.. So I could care less about Rivals or ESPN, I don't even look at that stuff. Bhelm is the only person I even pay attention to relative to this silly game. Plus I get tired of all the hat changing on the table and absurd way grown men react to an 18 year old kid.
I think both. Ever watch any of the camps on TV like the Elite 11? All of the kids are rail-thin. Moffitt will have him eating once he hits camp in the summer.
Coaches will look at kids as to what will be. Can't they add weight? Will it slow them down? etc. Remember many come from a single parent home, eat fast foods, never been taught what to eat, how to exercise, etc. D-Bowe and Buster Davis both gained over 15 lbs. while at LSU. As for the stars, funny, the two lowest rated players from last years class, both played in every game last year... http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/school/_/id/99/class/2012
I do, however, find it odd that he has not been given a 1or 2 star ranking. His statistics from last season says he can play. I remember when Mattheiu was a 2 star player, maybe even unranked, and when he was offered by LSU and verbally committed, he miraculously recieved a 4 star ranking. I think being offered by a big program, and accepting, he would have been issued at least a 2-3 star ranking. I know it makes no difference in the scheme of things, but I find it odd the recruiting services 1) had him listed with no ranking, given his statistics this past season, and 2) issued no stars since a verbal to LSU.
Rivals just gave him a 4-star http://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrec...ears-145777;_ylt=AleAPjDfXYdBRBNKTyyrsYhDPZB4
ESPN also just gave him a 4-star and put him on the ESPN300, and gave him the following traits: hands, speed, catch in traffic, and yards after catch. Their scouting report for him begins: "Considering this guy's size, you can't help but be impressed with his skill-set and overall production in all three phases of the passing game. Spears is an impressive overall athlete with agility, body control and the ability to pluck and snag balls away from his frame while on the move." http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/171881/kevin-spears
