Quotes from Barrow in the Advocate today on our MLB situation: “D.J. (Welter) is having a hell of a spring right now,” (Lamin) Barrow said. “As long as he keeps progressing, nobody is going to beat him.” “He has a tenacity about him that you can feel playing next to him,” Barrow said. “After the scrimmage, he asked me when I was going to watch film,” Barrow said. “He was right there. If he’s not in there more than me, it’s not anybody else. Hats off to him” “It doesn’t matter if I’m on the inside or outside. I’ve just go to assume the role.” “It’s approaching every day like you can be jumped, you can lose your spot,” Barrow said. “I’ve never sat back on my heels and felt like I’m comfortable.”
Reminder on redshirt junior DJ Welter: He was the Louisiana Class 3A Defensive Player of the Year after leading his high school to a state championship victory with 143 tackles as a senior..the year before, as a junior, he led his high school to the state championship game with 128 tackles
Notes on the scrimmage Thursday (practice day #9) Mettenberger had another big day, completing 21-of-35 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown Les: “We were sloppy at times on the offensive side of the ball. ... they’re shooting themselves in the foot and they have to understand that we are not going to play football that way. ... the quarterback is throwing the ball better, but we have to improve" Some of the things that Miles said the Tigers have to correct on offense include penalties, the center- quarterback exchange and protecting the football. ... Other offensive standouts for the Tigers included running back Kenny Hilliard, who led all rushers with 90 yards on 20 carries. Terrence Magee added 76 rushing yards, including an 11-yard TD run, on seven attempts, while Jeremy Hill had 60 yards on 13 carries. Alfred Blue was again held out ... Jarvis Landry led all receivers with seven catches for 77 yards, which included a 7-yard TD reception from Mettenberger, Landry also hauled in a 30-yard catch during the workout. Freshman Avery Peterson followed with four receptions for 60 yards; Dillon Gordon had four catches for 40 yards and Odell Beckham, Jr. added a pair of receptions for 30 yards. ... Defensively, Rasco had his best outing of the spring with five tackles, three of which were sacks. Two of Rasco’s sacks came during the 2- minute drill against the No. 1 offense. Rasco’s final sack of the day came on fourth-and-long and would have ended the contest had it been a real game. “Rasco had a nice day,” Miles said “He continues to improve with every practice. It looked like (Craig) Loston had a nice day as well. He made some big plays for that defense. “Defensively, I thought we improved. The defense lined up and did the right things.” Other defensive leaders for LSU included Loston with four tackles, including one tackle for loss; linebacker Lamin Barrow with four tackles and a fumble recovery, linebacker D.J. Welter with three tackles and freshman defensive tackle Christian LaCouture with four tackles. LSU will take this week off for spring break before returning April 7.
Do any of you roster-watchers have a scholarship count? How is LSU positioned to meet the 85 in August?
Looking at the numbers, we have 64 for the Spring game, if everyone makes it in the fall. 83, so that leaves a couple to give to walk-on's. Thats if my count is correct.
Brick Haley on the progression of DT Freak Johnson: "I am expecting big things from him, and right now, there has not been any disappointment."
