I am pretty skeptical about "fight" stories. If you remember, that was also the charge made before the NC game against Alabama to "explain" losing that game. Supposedly some dispute arose but amazingly LSU beat writers who were in the locker room where that supposedly took place and "we were there the entire time from the time they entered to the time the team ran out to go to the field" said absolutely nothing happened. No fight...no shoving...no heated words....nothing. I still suspect it was the other deal. Let's face it - Mettenberger has never been accused of being the most mature guy in the world and we can go back to the barroom incident in Georgia. Some kids just grow up slower than others. I THINK that the fact that this is now Mettenberger's team at the QB position has made him mature now. His interviews since the end of last season have been impressive. I think the fact that people are now depending on him + the fact that a lucrative NFL career may hang on his attitude probably has a lot to do with this.
Man, did this guys recruiting rankings soar from back when he committed to us. Now he is rated... #3 SDE - #23 on Rivals100, 5-star ***** #5 DE -- #66 on Scout100 #7 SDE -- #75 on Top247 #23 DE -- #292 on ESPN300 US Army All American Offers to SEC (LSU, South Carolina, Tennessee, Auburn, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Miss St, Missouri, Vanderbilt), Big Ten (Ohio State, Purdue), Pac (Southern Cal, Arizona St), ACC (Miami, Clemson, UNC), Notre Dame, etc
Matthew Osborne of Southernpigskin, who previously worked as the South Region Senior Scout for a national scouting service, published this article the other day picking the best impact recruit from each SEC school... SEC Impact Recruits We are now two weeks away from National Signing Day and it is time to start evaluating what each school has in their current stable of commits. In every class, there are always a handful of prospects who go on to make impacts at the college level immediately. Although SEC schools are not finished assembling their 2013 recruiting classes, let’s take a look at some current verbal commitments who could make an immediate impact in the SEC in 2013. ... LSU – DL Frank Herron (Central HS – Memphis TN) ...Herron has added significant weight since the end of his junior season and already has a frame capable of handling the pounding of an SEC schedule. ... Herron possesses a very rare blend of size and agility, which will impress LSU’s coaches.
This is from Herron's U.S. Army All-American bio... Herron is a tall defensive end who has a good first step and does an excellent job of using his length. He has shown the ability to quickly change direction and use his burst to make quick work of blockers and get into the backfield with a limited number of steps. Herron used a wide variety of moves when taking on offensive linemen, keeping them on their heels with his ability to work around the edge or quickly swim to the inside. With proper coaching and physical development, Herron will overcome his tendency to play high and turn into a dominate force off the edge.
Being that Herron is from Memphis, TN, Volnation has a huge 67-page discussion thread on him. Some highlights... Starting from 11-04-2011 film looks good Lock him up! Ole Miss has a really strong presence here. A lot of that has to do with the amount of graduates and fans of OM there are in Memphis. Oxford is only 45 minutes away. Tennessee is going to have a great class This kid could grow into a monster DE for us. wow another 2013 kid with talent from tn that we are already working. He's a beast. Only a matter of time before he commits. I'm liking this '13 class a LOT! Boom. Herron will be great! Herron ... is pretty much a lock to be at least a 4-star. IMO Herron will commit once he is able to visit campus. He already moves well for his size. He's going to be a nasty DE. Sounds very, very good for UT. Herron states that he has visited UT once before for a basketball camp and he loved it. Loves the campus and university. He also talks about current Vol football player Cameron Clear and current Vol basketball player Jeron Stokes are his "brothers". Tennessee looks to be producing some elite talent this year. Love the news about Herron. He's a beast. Wow recruiting for 2013 is off to a much faster start than in previous years. I hope UT locks up Frank soon. In a Scout video he said he loves Ole Miss' campus, and that he also has a cousin there and said that she is really pushin towards Ole Miss. He likes the coaches and has a good relationship with coach Harris. Also said he likes Tennessee and the relationship he is building with Dooley. Hope he ends up a Vol. all signs point toward VOL.. This kid looks legit He has good speed He's a very good athlete for his size. I really wouldn't mind having Carr and Herron opposite each other. I think we'll line up with those two in four man fronts on third downs in the future (2014). That would be fun for us to watch. Herron looks like he is really good. And his size is really good. His speed is definitely good for his size. Is now a 4* on Rivals Herron will be a Vol, baby. The perfect compliment to Jason Carr on the other side. Book it. Couldn't be a better weak and strong side combo at defensive end (Carr and Herron). ... Bringing it, VOLS. Let's get it going! "Lettttt's GOOOOOOOO" *Lil Jon voice* Herron should be a Vol in the end... but that's 11 months from now. I just want Herron and firmly believe he will be a Vol This guy right here is going to be a star. Big athlete that can move like this coming off the edge in a multiple defense is going to be crazy. Herron will commit soon Would be a huge pickup. I keep hearing he's about to commit as well. ... I keep seeing mention of it from various people in Memphis who I know for a fact are very well connected down there. Frank Herron come on down. A man of your posture should do two things: wear Tennessee orange and be called 'sir'. Herron, I think he can be star with his athletic ability. That's a big fast young guy. With some coaching he'll be dominant. And he'll look good doing it in Orange. He'll commit the next time he's on campus. Per the 247 article, Herron called his visit to Tennessee "pretty awesome" & "eye- opening". His mom came w/ him & she loved the academic support the players are provided. The staff was telling him how much they need him. He hung out w/ Stokes & Clear while he was here & they were really selling him on being a Vol. Herron & his mom plan on being back on campus for a Spring practice or the Orange & White game. "It was awesome, I liked it a lot," Herron said. "Just seeing Cam and Jarnell again and they were telling me wonderful things about Tennessee." Vol! LSU offered... Would be Mingo-type player for them. I'm glad these big schools are offering, though. (that is up to 03-07-2012....to be continued in my next post...)
