Season tickets for football are expensive, especially if you have parking passes or premium seats. I once had basketball tickets too, through the entire Dal Brown era. But they were also expensive. When LSU was riding high in basketball, I kept them up. But when LSU started foundering under Brady, I dropped them. It was just too much money to spend on tickets to see a poor product. People don't want to go see a poor program. There is no place on earth where people will go and watch consistently poor teams.

Dale Brown brought the crowds to the PMAC. When another coach does as well, the crowds will return. This is the way it has always been. It works that way in football and baseball, too.

If you want fans to pack the PMAC, all we have to do is fire Johnny Jones...and hire Nick Saban as men's basketball coach...and use all the Saban envy that's rampant here to our advantage !!!! ;)

Attendence aside, with the BB recruiting finished for this year (I guess?) who are the top recruits for 2014 that LSU has a real chance to get committments from? Hornland - Green, any early inside info?

How can you argue that LSU is not a baseball school? That's just silly.

Great post and good points. Not sure how many SEC teams/fans have the same "options" as LSU fans in the sense that you get crazy, spend serious dough in the fall, and then, some few months later, you get crazy and spend a lot of money on baseball. I would have guessed that certain schools like Alabama, Vanderbilt, Florida, would be similarly situated, but maybe I'm underestimating that nut. Even still, as I said, I can't imagine that the seemingly lack-luster hoops attendance is solely due to baseball. I for one, wouldn't pay my money to watch baseball, but I would for basketball for example. But, I can't argue with the fact that 10k+ attend baseball, which does compete with basketball starting about right now.

I think again, that it does take time for a fanbase to change season ticket purchasing/momentum around a new coach and a new team, and certainly agree that folks want to see a winner. I guess the flipside of course is that with only 2 home games left, when this basketball team is in the "stretch run", the cost of a ticket and the fact that baseball is going on, shouldn't be an valid excuse for us not getting more than 8K to show up, should it? Shouldn't "true fans" start to get the word and come out, for one or two key home games?

I think it will be an interesting measure of fan support next year, because certainly, LSU will be challenging for the upper echelon in the SEC. If we only average say 1K more than this year, I'll kind of view that as a disappointment. I was very nicely surprised to see that the women drew like 6700 in their game against UK the other night, when they probably average something like half of that. Of course, when you compare that to somewhere like Tennessee and it's a completely different world--and you've got to wonder how Nicki Caldwell feels when she played at UTenn...

I'll be going to Wednesday's game and I'm curious to see what student attendance will be. Midterms are still a couple of weeks away and admission is free, so there are no excuses there.

Consistency. Fans need consistency. We've had spurts of good and bad for several years now, and I think that has hurt attendence; right when the fans start to think things have turned around and excitement is building, they are rewarded with ho-hum ball. We're getting a taste of success at the end of the season, but I expect the fans will be slow to react next season. If we start winning, by the end of the season the PMAC might be jumping. But if we start slow, expect a slow response.

I hear what you are saying, but isn't that sort of an excuse? What is consistency? Consistency within a season (Tigers have won something like 9 out of 12 games here recently) or consistency over several seasons? If so, just look at attendance records at Vanderbilt, Arkansas, and Tennessee. How consistent have those programs been? Are a few more Wins here and there really the reason? I think consistency does lead to overall support and trends in attendance from season to season, but I don't think it is the end all be all here.

Good win by the way, for the LSU tigers last night! And, another thread to discuss HOOPS specific to a game!? Way to go posters!

the point about baseball is a good one, its similar to the well-known one about football but more believable. i can see how baseball or even football affects season tickets, but how are there not 10k that will go to a basketball game in January? hell, the season is 2/3 over before baseball starts.

the low attendence through the brady years and even the last SECC run is hard to stomach. especially when you see that bama, tenn and mizz have never been to the FF.

i dont think this is really a knock on lsu, just reality. i dont think there are any fan bases that support three sports really well, are there? probably UTx
