I believe he threw one pick and he fumbled twice. It's just one game. Will be interesting to see how the season transpires for him. I think the kid is what he appears to be - 6'6" (or more) of raw talent and gusto who might turn into a great QB in a few years. But I hope LSU takes another, more "college ready" QB this class. As previously stated in other threads - we have a "want" for a QB in 2012. :hihi:
Athens High won last night, Rivers ran 24 yards for a score and also threw an 11-yard pass for a TD in a 37-13 route. Athens fell behind 6-0, then scored 30 straight points. AHS running back Ryan Horton ran for 183 yards. Rivers threw for 80 yards or so from what I can remember.
Missed that one, but found one report that says "23 yard touchdown pass to Tristian Castro" ... high school reports in Athens just aren't that accurate it appears.
Rivers and his team (the Athens High Golden Eagles) just went up against the #1 team this weekend (the two-time defending Alabama 5A State Champions), and lost 27-35... Rivers scored 26 of the 27 points for his team (3 TD passes, 1 TD run, 1 two-point conversion). Athens Golden Eagles (QB Rivers) vs. #1-ranked Russellville Golden Tigers (Alabama 5A Champions in 2009, 2008, 2004, 2003, 2002, 1992, 1987, 1968, 1967, 1966, and 1961). --Russellville's D had allowed a total of 307 yards -- 13 passing -- in its two games this season (average of 153.5 yards -- 6.5 passing -- per game) before facing Rivers and Athens in Game 3. --Russellville has a superstar RB/LB who is a Rivals 5-star LB recruit for 2011 (#2-ranked OLB recruit in the nation for 2011) in Brent Calloway (committed to Saban's Alabama program), and a Rivals 3-star LB recruit for 2011 in Robert Terrell (committed to Charlie Strong's Louisville program). --Russellville jumped out to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter, but a pair of TD passes from Stephen Rivers to Terrance Hobbs and Riggs Bailey cut the Golden Tigers lead to 21-13 by halftime. In the fourth quarter, Athens got two more touchdowns from Rivers: Rivers hit Bailey with a touchdown pass with 9:08 left in the game. Rivers was stopped on the 2-point conversion. Then Rivers pulled the Golden Eagles within one touchdown on a 13-yard TD run and found Bailey on the 2-point conversion. Rivers and the Golden Eagles received a final chance at an upset after forcing Russellville into a three-and-out with a little more than a minute remaining in the game, but Athens fumbled away the potential game-tying drive with a turnover deep in its own territory. Rivers finished 9-for-18 for 100 yards, three passing touchdowns, one 2-point conversion, one interception, and one rushing touchdown. Note that Rivers passed for more yards per game last season, but that his team isn't as much of a passing team this year as they were last year. Why? Well for one, this new RB for Athens has been stepping up with three straight 100-yard rushing games, Ryan Horton: --Athens senior RB/LB Ryan Horton wasn’t expecting his name to be the one Allen Creasy called upon to help fill the void left by graduation in the Athens High running game this fall. But as it turns out, the Golden Eagle head coach made a wise decision in doing so --He had 148 rushing yards on 22 carries (6.73 YPC) in their first game --He had 138 rushing yards on 30 carries (4.6 YPC) in their 2nd game (their Class 5A, Region 8 opener), which is the most Athens High has had a running back rush for in a long time according to the coach. 'I didn’t have any idea until later that I was the first in a while to rush for that many yards,” Horton said. “We set a team goal at the beginning of the week to have 200 yards of rushing. We knew that if everybody did their job, that we could get close to reaching that. The line did the hard job, I just ran." --Against #1 Russellville in Game 3, Horton finished with 114 yards on 19 carries (6.0 YPC). --Before the game this weekend, Russellville coach Doug Goodwin said that he wasn't necessarily counting on Stephen Rivers stealing the show against his defense. “They play-action pass some,” Goodwin said of Athens’ offense, “but if the first two weeks are any indication, they’re more of a power-running team than a passing team.” Last season, Rivers completed 61 percent of his passes for more than 2,100 yards and 22 touchdowns. But Athens isn’t as deep at wide receiver this season, and Rivers hasn’t surpassed 100 yards passing in either of his first two games of 2010. Last season, when Athens played Russellville, the Russellville front seven harassed Rivers in a 28-14 Russellville victory. In that game, Rivers passed for 230 yards and one single touchdown in a 15-of-27 (55.5%) performance where he also threw two interceptions and was sacked five times Russellville Playoff and Championship History Russellville High School Athletics -- Russellville, AL Battle of the prospects (Sept. 9, 2010) Battle of the prospects | TimesDaily.com | The Times Daily | Florence, AL Horton becomes big part of Golden Eagles' offense (Sept. 9, 2010) Horton becomes big part of Golden Eagles' offense » Sports » The News-Courier in Athens, Alabama Russellville clips Eagles (Sept. 11, 2010) Russellville clips Eagles, Tanner runs by Wildcats » Sports » The News-Courier in Athens, Alabama Calloway, Golden Tigers hold on (Sept. 11, 2010) Calloway, Golden Tigers hold on | TimesDaily.com | The Times Daily | Florence, AL
