I've been reading posts by Bama fans on several forums saying they have never heard of this Ely person until just now.
On another LSU board, I saw another LSU fan saying the same thing: how Saban is just offering Ely to keep LSU from getting him. But your post here got some attention on tidefans.com: One of the posters on Tiger Forum's recruiting board accused Coach Saban of going after Ely just to keep LSU from signing him. Also, as soon as this became a rumor, Stephen Rivers mystically became a far superior QB to Ely, "after all his brother is an NFL quarterback." It is a sort of perverse fun to read those posts. You would think an LSU fan familiar with CNS would understand that with fewer spots to fill in the 2011 class, it would be the height of absurdity to waste an offer simply to stump a conference rival. Even if Ely was not on our radar screens until now, it makes sense to sign at least one quarterback every year for depth's sake. In CNS I trust. Question: 11 FL QB Phillip Ely? - TideFans.com (post #7 in the thread)
:angryfire Plant's Ely picks Alabama Posted on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2010 at 5:41 p.m. Plant's Phillip Ely, A four-star prospect ranked the No. 5 quarterback recruit in the nation by Rivals.com, announced Wednesday afternoon that he'll be playing for Alabama at the next level. He also owned offers from Arizona State, Clemson, LSU, Mississippi, USF and Wake Forest, among others. Meanwhile, Plant offensive tackle Tony Posada announced his commitment first, going with Michigan. Both were instrumental parts in Plant’s Class 4A state championship team two years ago and starters on last year’s Class 5A state title squad. Ely is 19-0 as a varsity starting quarterback and just competed in last month's Elite 11 Quarterback Camp in California. At nearly 6-6, 325 pounds, Posada has also become one of the nation’s top tackle prospects. Still, the ascension of the two prospects to elite status was remarkable. Midway through their junior years only a handful of mid majors came biting, but toward the tail end of the Panthers’ title run and throughout the offseason, their stocks rose. The Panthers' third major prospect, running back/defensive end James Wilder Jr. is planning to announce his college decision next Wednesday. Florida, Florida State, Georgia and Alabama are his finalists. It's all good, I think it is funny that Bama fans have never heard of this Ely guy, when you have a few LSU fans disappointed with Rivers because "he is not Ely" -- this same Ely guy that Bama fans have never even heard of.
Shock to me! I didnt know he was looking at Bama. Oh well, LSU still hs Zach and Rivers for now with a hell of a 2011 class. Geaux Tigers!!!!
Good pickup for the bammers :thumb: Ely is good but the QB situation at Bama is gonna be tough to crack (stacked). I'm very confident in Z. Lee staying to play football so i'm not upset whatsoever. And for the record.. no, Rivers is not as good as Ely. Rivers impresses me and I like his pedigree.. but I think Ely has the potential to be ready early on. Ultimately we'll end up with a pocket-passer and a dual-threat QB. I'm fine with that. I had to laugh at the Bama fan saying we're pumping up Rivers after Ely went elsewhere.. cause they're doing the same to a previous unknown to them in Ely :hihi:
