So what's the deal with this recruit exactly? He (or his dad) says Miles offered him a scholarship, then Miles changed his mind? I don't follow recruiting much, so this is just based on my recollection of a newspaper article from a few weeks ago.

He did not have a commitable offer because LSU wanted to evaluate him more before accepting his commit.

Seems like his dad wanted to push the issue.

So here's a dumb question (remember, I don't follow recruiting very well!) - what are the various types of offers?

There is only one. You either have an offer or you dont.

However, LSU coaches will tell players they are scholarship worthy but they have to wait until the coaches want them. It is a good recruiting tool because it makes them feel wanted.

Not a dumb question at all, I hope, because I asked it last recruiting season myself...this is what made sense to me...

Coaches make offers that fall into two categories, from what I understand:

Conditional offers in which an offer is made on the condition that more and further evaluation is needed or on the condition that something else falls into place...such as another one of the recruits committing to play elsewhere. "If this higher rated running back that we want more than you goes somewhere else, then we'll want you to go to LSU."

Commitable offers which are offered without such conditions and will be accepted immediately if the recruit decides to commit.

In either case, the commitments from the recruits have to be accepted by the head coach...and are just promises until binding contracts are signed on national signing day.

The speculation concerning Storm Johnson is that he had received a non commitable offer pending further evaluation because Storm transferred to a new high school after not even starting for his old high school. He may have had some problems like an injury that no one knew about or he was in the coaches dog house for personal reasons. Coach Miles wanted to wait to see further evaluation of Johnson, but Storm's dad went public to the Times Picayune saying that the LSU coaching staff had accepted his son's commitment when, in fact, they had not.

There's also a third type of commitment called a silent commitment in which a commitable offer is extended and a commitment is received from a recruit (and accepted by the school)...but both the school and the recruit keep the news quiet so that other recruits don't know what is actually happening and other recruits aren't scared away. This is deceptive and I don't believe Les Miles does this...at least I think he's honest with the recruits and their families even though the public (and another coach) doesn't have to know who LSU is recruiting. I can see this happening in the case of a recruit that is flying totally under the radar...like a recruit from a foreign country or something.

A lot of the top recruits collect offers and rate their success by how many they get. If they don't get an offer from a school they will drop them from consideration pretty quick. So most schools make what some call "spring offers" which are all conditional in some way. But you get on a kids "offer list" and stay in contention.

As time goes by the nature of the offer can evolve or devolve depending on many factors as has been mentioned above. But some recruits know that their best chances of getting aboard is to commit as quickly as possible, when the coaches have 20 scholarships to give, and not let it wait until the coaches have 4 scholarships left and better recruits than you on the line. Johnson commit was premature.

LSU could have worse problems than not having room for 4-star running backs.
