Re: 2010 RB Storm Johnson "pretty much" COMMITED TO LSU

John Deshazier doesn't understand what's going on and has made the assumption that Storm's silent commit was kept on the QT so as not to scare away much more highly rated running backs in Seastrunk or Lattimore. That just doesn't make sense to me. Neither one of those running backs would be scared of competition wherever they decide to go. In fact, people here keep saying that Storm's a power back and the other two are finesse type backs and would be utilized differently.

What does make sense is that LSU's desire to not announce their acceptance of Storm's commitment may have something to do with recruits at positions other than running back. It probably has something to do with overall numbers and not with the numbers at running back.

With the new SEC scholarsip limits, it seems that more kids are committing earlier to lock up a spot on LSU's roster. It's probably the same at other schools in the SEC as well. If LSU is slow playing someone at, say the defensive line position in case the top recruit commits somewhere else, and if there's only one or two spots left at LSU, then the backup guy may get scared into committing elsewhere...especially if the other SEC coaches are telling the recruit that so and so is in the bag for LSU and they better not snooze and lose out entirely. Also the apparent lack of roster spots may scare away the highly rated recruits that have last minute interest in LSU as NSD approaches.

Either way, I do agree with Deshazier that keeping commitments silent is deceptive. I think it's better for your credibility to be upfront and openly honest with all the recruits, but there's no obligation to tell the press or the public everything...That's why Deshazier is being critical...because the press is being kept out the loop.

As I mentioned earlier, the other legitimate reason for silent commits is to gain publicity announcing at the all-star games on ESPN etc., to gain publicity for the school. I hate the grandstanding by some of the recruits, but the coaches feel the pressure to have someone stand up and announce for LSU when the competition keeps getting free pub by having recruit after recruit commit during the game and at halftime. Deshazier makes no mention of this and acts as if silence must be sleazy. Silence isn't inherently bad, but telling everyone you are going one place while knowing you are going another is sleazy and being a punk.

    Bhelm,

Do you really think we may only take one back this class? That means we would only have two backs between this class and last class. That doesn't seem smart to me. I don't think we need three backs but two backs for sure. I was in the "take Christine Michael" camp last year too.

Then why accept Allen and Porter publicly later? It has to be about other running backs.

No, I think we will take 2 backs this class. I was just saying that say Lache decides to hold out till NSD and we save a spot for him that we could be left with 1 back in this class again. But that will not happen because Lache will probably announce at the UA game.

Good point...so is the one about publicity. I'm speculating but the coaching staff knows. Maybe it really is about Storm wating to take some officials.

Who cares? Miles has been a real clean recruiter and seems to do things the right way. If the staff wants him to keep it quiet they obviously have a reason and it somehow benefits LSU. When we start having the problems and violations Tennessee is having I'll get my panties in a wad, until then I'll trust the staff knows what they are doing.

If Lache waits that long, why have SJ stay silent? It does not seem likely that a "secret" commit will stay secret for 6-8 months. It all seems silly, especially if they accepted SJs verbal as he states.

Agree with you overall, still it is curious and odd.
