:geaux: That may currently be true, but it doesn't take much for depth to go to shyt in a hand basket as we all know. See the last 2 years.:nope: Anyway, I'd just hate to see LSU lose this kid over this issue. Doesn't seem right to ask him to greyshirt one or two days before fall practice begins. That decision should have been made or at least discussed back around signing day. The kid is probably pissed and I can't say I blame him. Hope he stays though. :LSU231:

:geaux: Never mind, my bad.:rolleye33: Read the other thread and found out about the rule change. Really bad that happened & really put the staff in a shytty situation. Having to ask kids to take a greyshirt at the last minute really sucks.:( Hope it all works out for the best. Dayum NCAA strikes again!!!!:po: :LSU231:

LSU stockpiling O-linemen recruits? Stavion Lowe, a 2009 recruit, just left LSU recently... but it was hard for him having to compete again fellow 2009 recruits Carneal Ainsworth, Chris Faulk, and Josh Williford. Now Porter, a 2010 recruit wants to bail as well? Wasn't the only other O-line recruit we took in that class Evan Washington? And right behind them, we already have commitments from O-linemen La'El Collins, Trai Turner, and Corey White, right?

Greyshirting is controversial especially when leaked too early and the kids are put in the spotlight of embarrassment. Mostly this stuff is dealt with at this time of year when the clearinghouse issues are resolved. LSU had about 6 guys who had question marks in qualifying and we were fortunate to have all of them qualify. You see no one talking about Fordham rumors because 95% of the time it is not a huge issue and they come in a semester later. (Still unclear is Fordham is an actual greyshirt option or not).

Usually greyshirts are offered to in-state prospects and at times legacies. I assume Elliott was picked because he is a project on the OL after playing DT in HS and he would be redshirting this season anyway.

Now what would you do on NSD when you get LOI in from Ego, Gore, Wright, Fobbs, Boone, Copeland, etc...? How much flack would Les get if he turned 2 of those guys away and on top of that 2or 3 of the 6 guys with qualifying issues didn't get cleared by the NCAA? Would fans see the Rivals and Scout rankings outside of the top 10 or worse and say well thank god we don't have to greyshirt anyone?

Just how it goes and 95% of the time not an issue at all. It is unfortunate that it works out this way especially for the kids who feel setback but sometimes it can be a blessing like it was for Harry Coleman who probably needed that extra time to get ready for college ball.

Now that we'll probably lose Porter, how does that affect this years class (2011) ?

Do we sign fewer recruits that may qualify when all is said and done...This affecting overall class size?

Do we recruit another offensive lineman now?

Do we switch another defensive lineman to offense ? (Can Ego Furgeson play tackle?...)

    Lots of potential ramifications.

I don't like this at all... this is what is wrong with this whole process.

Can't blame the kid for going some place else, I will be cheering for him wherever he goes... this is not the way stuff should be handled. The NCAA needs to make changes to the whole system.

It's unfortunate but the the "kids" understand the system and that teams must oversign. Its hard to object to everyone getting themselves eligible, as rare as that is. Someone has to transfer or sit a year when it happens. Some may have been warned early that grayshirts were a potential outcome.

Better for a lineman, who rarely play as freshmen and usually redshirt anyway.

so, bhelm, why porter? i mean, it seems OL is a serious place of need and depth since turnover is high there. why not an athlete, or WR, or DB, or a punter? do they have some sort of "draft" list where the players are ranked and he happens to be #85? or is it also based on academic concerns, or ability to pay own way, ability to qualify for other schollies (TOPS, academic, etc)?

i figure you will be checking these responses since i see posts from you anywhere from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.

No this is a bunch of BS. Look at what they are already signing for this year... sorry but there is not enough spots for all these guys. Epic fail. If this were just a one year thing that would be cool but the team isn't going to be able to sign 20 guys this year yet that is the direction they are going.

Sorry I don't buy this one.
