Oh come on you and a few others have been pimping him out longer than that on TSD. :thumb: All I can say is that the staff got a chance to see Mathieu along side both Hurd(at both LSU camps) and Carter this weekend and they made their choice. I would compare Mathieu interest to Beenie Logan last year. A sleeper that started seeing more and more interest come his way nationally and would have really heated up had they stayed uncommitted close to NSD.
re: Tyrann Mathieu COMMITS TO LSU!!!!! I heard he ran a 4.4 at the camp, any truth to this? He looks like he has excellent acceleration, IMO. Which is one of the most important things for a CB. When he gets beat, he recovers QUICK. That is something that really poked out to me. His ball skills look very good too(mostly because of his acceleration/recovery). Similar to Claiborne from last year. I'm guessing LSU evaluated him before camp and wanted to see him in person to confirm it.

YouTube - Tennessee Skills Camp - Day 2 (3) Taylor's boy in easy to spot. He's shown thruout the video...white t shirt and yellow shorts...can't miss. As soon as the video starts, you can see him about 4th in line. - Tyrann is shown defending a pass about the 2:35 mark. -

re: Tyrann Mathieu COMMITS TO LSU!!!!! Tennessee lost out on a good corner to UGA today, so I'm glad that we offered Tyrann today. He could have ended up getting an offer from Tenn quickly since Tyler Stephenson was also on their board. As bhelm said, this was not a kid who was going to be under the radar for much longer.
re: Tyrann Mathieu COMMITS TO LSU!!!!! I was looking at his stats from a New Orleans camp. He ran a 4.6-40 which was good for that camp but not great. He had a 4.3 shuttle which was about the 2nd best time I believe. However the most impressive thing was his 3 cone drill of 6.93. This was .5 to a full second faster than other guys at skill positions. As you may or may not know, the 3 cone drill is said to be the single most important drill used by Bill Belichek to evaluate DB talent. Mathieu time would be considered an average time for a potential pro at the NFL combine. Keep in mind the combine is performed on a fast surface by elite guys who have been training for this drill relentlessly in an effort to boost their draft stock. The kid may not be big or have great straight line speed, but if you believe one of the best defensive minds in the game he has what it takes in the most important measurable for DB's.
