Yeah, I remember the 148-141 game. I had some friends over at my parent's house to watch the game. One of my friends that was a die-hard Tiger fan and kind of high strung got so pissed that LSU "allowed" the game to go to OT (think they blew a lead late). He went outside and shot baskets on my goal during OT and we gave him the recap later. His dad is also a bit high strung and they left the Earthquake game shortly before the Hodson to Fuller TD. I was also at that game and do not bring it up in his presence. I don't understand how you can leave a game that's 6-0 in the 4th quarter. LSU played Loyola Marymount at least one other time in that era. At least one of the games had Gathers & Kimble but the other one (or two) didn't.
I heard someone say recently that the postseason in the NBA defines a player's career more than any other sport. Partially because one player can control the outcome more than any other sport. For example, a great QB is still on the field only half the game and requires a decent D to win it all. In MLB, everything is centered around season and career stats, which are taken from the regular season. I used to be a big baseball fan but now find it hard to even watch the playoffs because it takes place during the beginning of football season. Keeping up with fantasy football teams are much more important to me than the MLB playoffs (not that it should be that way).
I kind of tend to agree with that assumption. Michael Jordan is the greatest player of all time why? Because of his 6 rings right? Kobe considered one of the greatest, Bird, Magic, all have rings. Karl Malone definitely a hall of famer but would you consider him top 10 greatest of all time? Ok even better, list your top 10 athletes in their respective sports of all time and compare and contrast with who have won championships and who hasn't. Baseball it's all about stats, football while championships are important, stats are too, and the NBA stats are great, but not even close to championships. I bet at least 9 of your top 10 (if not all 10) greatest basketball players of all time have rings. I will do my top 10's in another post and we can see how it goes....
not in any order. Bill Russell Walt Chamberlin Michael Jordan Kareem Magic Bird Kobe Shaq Hakeem Tim Duncan hell my top 10 of all time all have championships. Now I would put Dirk, Stockton, and Malone in my top 25, none of them have championships. Barkley also.
That top 10 looks pretty good to me although some of the old timers may want to fit in guys like Oscar Robertson, Elvin Hayes, Jerry West, or John Havlicek. I've heard Hayes had all the talent in the world but never was around a supporting cast to get a ring. I wish more footage of the NBA existed from the 60s and early 70s. I haven't even seen much of Wilt. I think Maravich and Dr J would've had careers worth mentioning if the Hawks had been successful in signing Dr J. From the little I've read about the pre-season games they played together, it sounded like they were a match made in bball heaven. The Pistol leading the fast break and dishing to Dr J for big time dunks (when he was right in the middle of his prime). Wish there was footage of those games.
Alot of people wont put West in their top 10 because he lost 8 championships. See that's another thing, I guess in football, really the only position that is comparable to the NBA is quarterback. John Elway was a hall of fame qb, but if he hadn't won those 2 championships, he wouldn't be considered one of the greatest ever. Seems like Dan Marino is the one guy who gets a pass, he seems to always make top 10 or top 5 lists but has no ring. Jim Kelly would never get that same respect, and he lost 4 superbowls I think. Oscar Robertson, Elgin Baylor, Moses Malone, all could be there, but I shy away from people who played in the 50's 60's and even 70's with the exception of Russell, and Chamberlain because of the level of athletes they played against. I still think in today's game Russell and Chamberlain would have had hall of fame careers, but I'm not sure if West, or Havlicek would be superstars if they played today.
Rooting for Lebron James is Un-American. Assuming Dallas gets by OKC I hope they sweep James again in the finals. Bosh is a jackass too, but on a scale of 1-10 he's a 1 compared to James who is a 10. I'm indifferent about Wade since he just kinda stayed in place and reached out to make his team better.
I noticed last week during the lottery selection that one of the GMs (Minnesota?) commented that the NBA had a "habit" of having unusual outcomes. Cleveland got the #1 pick with the Clippers pick, which only had a 2.8% chance of getting the #1 pick. There have always been conspiracy theories since they started using the ping pong balls. Do they show the ping pong balls live like a typical powerball lottery? Is there an independent group that handles the selection?
independent and off camera. i think minnesota had never moved up one spot in 14 lotteries except last week when they moved up just one. their gm is nuts but it was funny. he says stupid **** publically all the time. GM David Kahn said what everyone was thinking after Cavs owner Dan Gilbert sent his 14-year-old son (who has a rare nerve disorder) to represent Cleveland. "This league has a habit, and I am just going to say habit, of producing some pretty incredible story lines. Last year it was Abe Pollin's widow and this year it was a 14-year-old boy and the only thing we have in common is we have both been bar mitzvahed. We were done. I told Kevin [O'Connor of Utah]: 'We're toast.' This is not happening for us and I was right."
