He said he WASN'T terrible. His argument isn't that JJ is bad. It's that JJ isn't awesome, like some bandwagon folks are claiming. But he certainly deserves to lead going into the Spring.
Flynn, like Mauck, was a game manager. Mauck had a GREAT defense to rely on. Flynn had an OC and GREAT talent on offense to rely on. With the addition of John Chavis, JJ might have both! :crystal::crystal::crystal::crystal:
Yeah, a teams defensive performance dictates what an offense calls and can dictate the game flow. It makes a big difference for a guy like JJ who uses play action a lot since they wouldn't be looking for the run as much if we fall behind a lot.
Did y'all see the post-game interview with Miles and JJ after the GT game? Miles' comments and body language made it very clear he was telling JJ: "Wow, kid, that is what I have been looking for in a QB... you just earned the #1 spot going into 2009." Hopefully JJ's brillant QB play wasn't a temporary spike like Lee's brillant QB play in the 2nd half against Auburn... but instead is just the beginning of a career that will go down as one of the greatest in NCAA history!
I agree we'll be much better at the QB position next year. Considering what we have on the team, it would be almost impossible to be worse. JJ showed me a lot in the GaTech game. Can't remember which series it was, but he was back to pass, had nothing, and ended up getting sacked (actually, he was creamed on the play). BUT, he didn't try to force anything...tells me that he understands each offensive posession should end in a kick (extra point, field goal or punt)....not an interception. Kid shows amazing poise considering he has had 2 starts....don't forget, that was a pretty big stage he performed on (given the love that the Jackets were getting going into this game). JJ starts. Shep is our 2006 version of Tebow-Harvin hybrid. JLee is the backup. IMO. No matter, it will be better, and should be really good.
I NEVER said CP claimed JJ was terrible. CP said his play wasn't great, it just wasn't terrible. I just elaborated that it wasn't even close to terrible, and it was pretty damn good IMO. No knock on CP at all.
Arkansas' defense was pretty bad, and Georgia Tech's pass defense was horrible, and yet Jefferson's play was only okay. It was a big improvement from Lee, but judged on its own merits, it was far from spectacular. He will improve, but anybody expecting better QB play in '09 than we had in '07 is not seeing reality.
I would say Flynn's performance was above average. You expect much better next year from JJ? Or just eventually?
I can see that: Flynn had four years of training, practicing, and preparing at LSU before he led us in 2007. We don't have anything close to that kind of experience at QB going into 2009. I honestly think RP set us back two years -- 2008 and 2009
As far as individual production, yes, next year. As far as completely understanding the game, eventually. Just to clarify, Flynn only averaged 200.6 ypg passing and 17.9 ypg rushing. (2007) I expect JJ to surpass both of those stats next season.
