How 'bout F) whoever Les Miles picks for the job! I like backup WR's as PR's. They're sure-handed, are used to taking hits, and know how to run. I.E. - Randle. Good call, 99!
I imagine Randle will get his chance to show that he can handle punt returns. But he'll have to take it away from a veteran, it wouldn't be handed over "day one", not even under Nick. Les is not going to make the competition transfer to Auburn every day. If Randle were to earn himself a starting receiver position, I expect Les would prefer that he focus on that for a while and not try to learn two jobs at once. But if Randle is a reserve, not under pressure, and with fresh legs . . . I expect that Les will want to get him in the game more and he will see some punts for damn sure. What's wrong with that? It's a team game. Randle may be the best hot-dog punt returner since they invented the game, but we haven't seen him play yet. Holliday and Jones are veterans and we know what they can do. If Randle comes in here and earns the job, we'll all be delighted, but I'm not going to start putting down Trindon just because Randle had a reputation in high school.
I don't care if Trindon has Reggie Bush moves in addition to, well, Trindon Holliday speed. If he scores, I don't care if he ran a straight line untouched right up the middle. It ain't about highlight reels. It's about productivity. - That said, Trindon has proven that he can't handle the punt CATCHING duties...and with his track schedule, I am quite certain he hasn't had time to improve that during the "off season".
OK guys, if no one's with me about Rahim Alem as a punt returner... ...Would anyone like to see him Kick the ball? :hihi:. Just kidding Rahim this is gonna be your breakout year !!!
Look, I wasn't saying Rueben would be the next coming. I'm just answering the thread. They asked who would be a good candidate. I offered RR as a suggestion...based on his accomplishments in high school. And he's the farthest thing from a hot-dog. And I wasn't putting down Trindon. I just notice a sentiment amongst fans as if he's this prolific returner, and he's not. That's it. Just my opinion...
I appreciate the response, and think it certainly is a great option. I haven't thought of RR for this position. - As far as Trindon goes, you're incorrect if you don't think he's a prolific returner. He's just not that prolific returning PUNTS. NOBODY wants to kickoff to him. Shiftiness doesn't equate to prolific. He has multiple TDs returning kicks, including some punts. He just fumbles/muffs too many punts for me to feel comfortable with him back there, and yes...it does help to have more moves when returning punts. The first move is usually all you need though if the blockers have done a good job or the coverage team hasn't...especially if you have wheels.
Best I can find is this. Trindon has 3 returns for TDs...2 KO and 1 punt. Skyler had 4...all on punts. - Assuming TH gets one this year, they're equal as far as TDs go. Skyler is second all time in punt return yardage at LSU, behind Dominack Davis. But TH is right up there in KO return yardage, with a year to go. - IMHO, Kevin Faulk was the best returner in LSU history...again...IMHO. - Fact-neither Kevin Faulk nor Skyler Green will be returning any kicks for LSU this coming season. - Point is, Trindon is a GREAT kick returner...was kicked away from all last season...and stands a good chance to visit the endzone this coming season...returning KOs. - So...some think TH is who needs to be returning punts. Others think Chad. Both have some experience with this...with mixed results. Chad has fumbled/muffed them before, as has TH. But TH averages more per return than Chad. Neither is a great punt returner, and with the athletes on this team, we should have a GREAT punt returner. It is an important skill position on this team...perhaps the most important in changing momentum or salting a game away. Most importantly though is establishing field position...in the positive. Don't need someone back there giving the OTHER team great field position and new found momentum. Need someone to consistently put LSU in good field position, and take one to the house every now and then if everything aligns just right. - Who is that man? Again, too many stellar athletes on this team not to find someone that can consistently do that. Since Skyler, we have not had a consistent punt return threat.
You guys are underestimating Shep if you don't think he can catch a punt. He's a natural football player, guys like that can catch the ball. Same as Chad Jones. Shep is by far our most dynamic guy with the ball in his hands, hence he sould be the guy.
I know. They ain't listenin', Bandit! I been saying that all thread. In the first post, I started by saying I was watching the DVD of the BCSNCG against OSU, and this subject came to mind when I saw Chad muff the punt that Coleman recovered. And he has muffed more than that one. Also, he just doesn't do much with it when he catches it anyway. - <Mr Jones, if I have offended you in any way, please understand that I think you're a BEAST on defense, and will likely be All American before you leave LSU to go on to an illustrious career in the NFL. Also, I think Coach Maineri should've pitched you about 10Xs more than he did...and should have let you close out the CWS finale>
