I think because Pelini is leaving OU, he's being made a scapegoat for what happened in the Orange Bowl by more than a few Sooner fans. Our DB's didn't look as good this past season as they did in 2003 either, but I don't think anyone blames coaching. Both schools lost quality players on defense and didn't get the same level of play out of the new starters. I think this staff is very solid and could stay together for a while.

My only concern is that it seems that Head Coaches who coached on the def. side of the ball seem to fair better overall. Parcells, Belichick, Saban, Stoops, Carroll, etc.. I think they bring an overall toughness to a team, that defensive smack you in the mouth attitude. I'm hoping that having an offensive minded coach doesn't diminish that quality about the Tigers. We've been a pretty rough bunch and I like that. It's helped us out tough several teams.

The most important staff hire (other than Miles) was Pellini, so I will only comment on him. Also, I think I will have to reserve judgement until at least spring practice when we hear what sort of system he wants to run. My main concern is that Pellini will come in and try to run HIS system regardless of the personnel we have here at LSU. CNS recruited big physical corners, because he needed size on the outside to play the type of aggresive man coverage he wanted to run behind his heavy blitzing scheme. From what I have read and what I saw with Nebraska, Pellini likes to run a cover 2 zone-blitzing style of defense. Now, while I have no problem with that scheme, and I think it can be a very effective defense, I don't think he can come in and run that scheme successfully next season. If he does it will neutralize our db's size advantage by putting them in space and forcing them to react which is not their strength. If that is the system Pellini wants to run, he should gradually implement it as he recruits athletes that fit his system. The worst thing a coach can do is ask a player to do something he can't. The system should adapt to the personnel, not vice versa.

Pelini has already said eveything you posted, that he will slowly institute his system into things, that he liked Saban's style of defense, that he knows Saban well and will continue to do much of what Saban did, etc. We actually played some cover 2 after the UGA game last year, switching back and forth during games. Played some Zone even in the NC game vs OU.

Pelini will bring these guys along slowly and will use the talent on the team to the best of their ability. Not all of our CB's are very big, Mario is pretty big, but I don't consider guys that go on an average 6 ft 188 to be giant corners.

A true 6ft corner is a big corner.

Miles let everyone know in his acceptance press conference that he understands this very important point.

Not sure I understand why a corner is talented enough to play man all over the field but not talented enough to drop in zone coverage?

Seems like that would be the other way around...

Good Grief....I remember me and someone else (who was it?) being the only two on this entire site that liked Miles when he was first hired.....thank goodness others have come on board.

Now come on Marine, that is a giant exaggeration. There were many of us on this board that liked the hire. Many were very disappointed but many were very happy as well.

Oh hell no...I am not exaggerating at all. You will never, ever hear me touting my own horn on something (I can't stand people doing it to be honest) but me and someone else who I can't remember were about the only two people who actually liked Les Miles when it was first known he was coming....I almost took a SabanFan break dealing with it.

Eventually people came to it but not at first. I stand by that statement fully.
