This is how averages can lie sometimes. The 03' team gave up a season High 24 points to R-Kansas. They gave up 19 To Florida, and didn't let anybody else sniff 15 points. That's more dominant than this years D by far.
Hard to answer until the end of this year. '03 only lost to Fla. and ran the table winning the MNC. Will this year's Tigers do the same? I don't know, of course. If I had to say right now, it would be '03. Tremendous defense and Matt Maulk (?) was such a smart leader that he didn't make the mistakes that get you beat. Seemed like he always put them in the position to win...and the rest is history.:geaux:
The 2003 team scored only 17 against a UGA D not as good as 2007 LSU, 0 points against a UF D not as good as 2007 LSU, only 17 points against an Ole Miss D not as good as 2007 LSU, and only 14 points against an OU D comparable to 2007 LSU. While this year's LSU team hasn't faced a D as good as 2003 LSU, they have scored at least 28 against every team they have played this year, including UF, Auburn, VT, and South Carolina. I don't see the 2003 LSU D holding this year's O to anything under 21 (which is still a TD under their lowest output so far his season), and I see the 2003 O scoring 28 at most (which is well above their poorest performances that year). I think 2007 would win 28-24.
I would have to say 2003 and I'm saying that with no mention of coaching, Saban or anything in that realm. There was a point in the season with the 03 team that if you put the opposition on their own 20, there was a 95% chance they could not drive 80 yards and score.....and that's big. That's something that the 07 team does not have. I still think that the 03 defense was the best defense the Tigers have ever had.....at least the best that I've ever seen in 36 years of watching LSU. And the offense was, like the other poster said, consistent. But it started and ended with that defense. The 07 offense is better but still not good enough to overcome the 03 defense IMO.
normally i would agree but that 13pts per game was before the adoption of the spread offense in the SEC. I believe the Defensive Coordinators are taking a couple of years to figure out how to stop it. the 2003 defense was much more exotic than the 2007. I believe that is based on the calls being made by Pelini to only rush 4 the majority of the time. With only 4 people being rushed and the occational basic all out blitz, LSU is only giving an average of 16 pts per game against much more exotic offense faced by the 2003 team. 2007 defense has more talent, it is just how the coaches are choosing to use it....
QB - 2003 slightly better (although debatable) RB - push TE - 2007 better OL - 2003 better DL - Push LB - 2007 better DB - 2003 better Special teams - 2003 better coaches - I'll not get into that. My opinion - 2003 better
Neither, the 2006 team was one of the best (most talented) we've ever fielded on both sides of the ball.
Perhaps...but they only scored 13 pts combined against Florida and Auburn (both losses) last year. Contrast that with the 2007 team which averages around 40 and hasn't been held to less than 28. As great as an arm as J.R. had it seems that Flynn is more consistent in moving the chains, especially b/c of his running abililty.
2003 Defense was one of the best ever. The starters didn't give up a rushing TD til the end of the season. And our starters pitched many shutouts up until the 4th quarter when they were pulled. We were up 31-0 on Auburn....Either way great game, this team we have this year is special. But let's wait til they actually accomplish something this year before we start comparing
