dont sell wvu short. they avg 30 ppg and 400ypg but lsu held them to less than half that. they have a good shot of going 12-1 of course you point is well taken that the big 3 remaining will change the #s but you may be discounting the lack cupcakes this season so far. i know 03 had va tech, but im sure there were 2 to 3 true cupcakes. mcneese and ulm may statistically negate the big 3 Os coming.
In 2003, given a month to prepare, LSU shut down the vaunted Oklahoma offense in the national championship game. That offense with the Heisman winner at QB, and so many other weapons was averaging 40+ points and I'm guessing close to 500 yards a game. They broke quite a few records that year. Against LSU, I remember this vividly. They got 154 yards...of total offense...in the entire game. Jason White 13-38 102 yards 0 TD's and 2 INT's. They only scored on a punt block (from 2 yards out) and off of an INT (about 35 yards out). That was the best defensive performance I'd seen against a tough opponent in a long time. That D gave up like 2 rushing TD's going into the OU game I think. Beastly. I think 2010 D has potential, but we have to lose 1 game at most this season to be able to compare the two defenses.
By the end of the 2003 season, capped off by an astounding defensive performance against the nation's best offense, it was essentially futile to go up against our defense. Futile.
True dat though our D was off the mark in 08. We knew PP was a good one but he didn't have the chance to shine like he has since Chavis has come on board.
I think the 2003 defense was better. I mean it reminded me of the NY giants defense with Taylor and Carson. Remember all the stunting, shifting and blitzing? That year, Eli Manning had no idea who was coming and from where...to the point that he threw the ball five yards short and into the ground trying to get the ball to a wide open receiver. The funny thing was, he rolled outand NO ONE was around him. But he had been hit from every direction all game long he just cringed assuming he was about to get hammered. Saban named the blitz packages after states and there were so many looks that they had to start naming them after European countries. But the main problem was that there were so many reads that the players had to make and that Saban had to install that he must have had to spend all the practice time with the first string. If you remember, the next year our defense fell off a lot because the guys that had to run that complicated stuff didn't know how to make the right reads...and we suffered for that. Four losses, if I recall correctly. That's why I cringe every time I hear that Miles won with Saban's players...the freshmen and redshirt freshmen back then didn't get much practice time and defensive reps, in particular, because the staff had to spend too much time with the starters installing that very complex system.
sentimental favorite cuz hes a honkie and has seniority. still #1 is the best thus far. im not buying in to JL after two half games. i need a lot more proof before i can make an accurate assessment. i will say, he does handle himself well during interviews. they try to get him to throw players and coaches under the bus and he doesnt miss a beat. kinda like how hes performed on the field thus far. maybe just maybe? cmon jl prove me wrong. i keep trying to find holes in our defense but they keep surprising me. its like a shockwave. just keeps coming. wave after wave of chaos and pressure. from the edge or up the gut. speed everywhere. awesome to watch. i didnt think chavis still had it in him. im not throwing him bouquets just yet. ill withhold those til the final gun. also, can we please put the multiquote atop the priority list? wtf
