7 is a bit bigger than I've ever experienced.
I've been in 3-4 footers in a 20 foot boat. Easily the nasty storm I've ever been caught in. We were lucky that Timbalier island was only a few hundred yards away, pulled in on the backside and rode out the storm on land. I would want NO part of 7 foot seas in a small boat like that. Open water is an animal that can't really be predicted. If you don't respect it, it will phuck you up.

21 foot Everglades can run out there pretty easily but it seems as if one might check a weather report before doing it. The 21cc are heavy boats and generally have t-tops -- youre eventually going to roll under those circumstances if you are anchored.

I spent the first half of my life on and around the gulf. My dad is a ship captain and I got to experience some chiit when I was younger I would rather forget. We always had boats when I was growing up and the ocean is no place for a small boat in 4' plus seas. Its even worse when its a chop vs rolling swells. I cant imagine these guys out in 7' seas on a 21' boat. Thats suicide.

i'm not an experienced boater, so if caught in a squall in open water with suddenly 7ft waves what is the best course of action?

Part of me says to anchor to keep the bow pointed into the waves to keep it from rolling?
In the end i'd probably just run for safety no matter what.

What if your engine were dead? Drift or anchor? (no sea anchor of course)

p.s. i seem to remember reading one article that said they were in the process of pulling anchor when the boat rolled.

head into them. all boats handle differently especially if you have a tuna tower or t-top. better to just run when you see it coming. there is a big difference between seven foot swells and seven foot wind created waves.
    youre going to die.

If you didnt have a sea anchor when you needed it you could use a bucket or your regular anchor but I would still pull out your rosary and red label.

My prayers are being sent to the families of the missing men, this is just so sad. I wish they would find the bodies of the men though. I just think that way the families could have some kind of closure.
