I think what you fail to understand is that majority of gun owners didn't buy a gun for self defense.
I am aware of that but not sure why it is relevant. Also this week a gun owner made the world safer by taking his legal gun to the theater. That great, well done. But he left it there by accident to be found by kids, loaded. This is what I mean. In Practice the net is less safety. http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2012/12/20/boys-make-the-right-move-with-loaded-gun-in-theater/?hpt=hp_t3
Not sure why that is relevant. You can buy it for a paperweight if you want. Still makes your life less safe.
Sure, certain instances are less safe. The fact that you cannot see a net positive in ANY situation is baffling.
Hunting and shooting range are options. Some even are art on a wall with no ammo. BTW still just your opinion. Zero facts to support anything you have said. Not a single shred of DATA has been presented by you.
Martin, according to this chart you are in fact less safe then me because, as referenced by the graph, you live in a higher population area. Pedestrians rank higher in Fatal Accidents caused. Do you swim? Hope not. Looks very unsafe.
I am safer because I don't drive, but the more important point is that you can't seem to determine what is relevant and what isn't.
I didn't say that. That why I say the net is more danger. In rare cases people act out succesful hero fantasies. Most of the time they don't and nothing happens. But more often that the good scenario, there is a bad scenario where your lady takes your gun and shots you, or you are depressed and shoot yourself, or your kid shoots his friend or whatever. You don't appear to be able to comprehend my point, so I will let you be.
You cannot prove a net more danger. I have asked and you haven't produced. Your examples, of where my wife wants to kill me has nothing to do with a gun. Come clean already.
STATISTICS ARE REVIEWED WHICH SHOW THAT A GUN IN THE HOME IS FAR MORE LIKELY TO LEAD TO THE DEATH OR INJURY OF A FAMILY MEMBER OR FRIEND THAN TO THE DEATH OF AN INTRUDER. DATA ON VICTIMIZATIONS AND THE USE OF FIREARMS FOR SELF DEFENSE ARE THEN EXAMINED FOR THE CRIMES OF BURGLARY, ROBBERY, ASSAULT, AND RAPE. IN EACH CASE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF GUNS IN PREVENTING OR DETERRING THE CRIME IS ANALYZED, AND COMPARED TO THE EFFECTIVENESS OF OTHER SELF DEFENSE METHODS. THE DATA PRESENTED IN THIS REPORT INDICATE THAT PRIVATE HANDGUN OWNERSHIP PROVIDES NO SIGNIFICANT DETERRENT TO BURGLARY AND VIOLENT CRIME. IT MAY, IN FACT, ESCALATE THE SEVERITY OF THE VIOLENCE IF OFFENDERS BELIEVE THEY MUST BE MORE HEAVILY ARMED THAN THE CITIZENRY. THE STATISTICS ALSO SHOWED THAT THE USE OF A WEAPON IN RESISTANCE TO A CRIMINAL ATTACK USUALLY RESULTS IN GREATER PROBABILITY OF BODILY INJURY OR DEATH TO THE VICTIM https://www.ncjrs.gov/App/Publications/abstract.aspx?ID=35035
