All of these statistics certainly make sense. There are so many stories out there about children being abused by stepfathers/mothers or boyfriends/girlfriends of kids' single parents (especially single moms, and I'm sure lack of financial security is a big cause of many of these cases.) I've have students write about past experiences like this, as well. It's heart-breaking how many children cannot breathe easily in their own homes. However, speaking specifically about the Duggars (maybe not all fundamentalist Christians--though I'm really not around any, so I don't really know), their views on sex are rather bizarre in today's world. The whole no bodily contact/kissing until marriage is not realistic. People are sexual beings, and the teen years are a prime time for young people to start "experimenting" with sex. Maybe that's what was going on with Josh? But he had victims, too, and it's ruining his life now. Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar are really weird about sex. Still, all the while, Jim Bob is always hanging all over Michelle with her baby talk voice and 1980's permed mullet. They are very odd, and I've always felt badly for their children. The older daughters (not the sons) have raised all of the younger children. Each older daughter is part of what they call a "buddy system," which means they have 3 or 4 younger siblings that they feed, teach/homeschool, dress, and bathe. Michelle does NOT do this for the younger children at all. The youngest daughters on the show have always seemed really confused about who their mother actually is. I don't know; I find them fascinating because I'm an only child, so it's crazy seeing that many siblings in one place. But I have two kids is all that I can manage. I wouldn't even do well in the buddy system the Duggars have.
So how can you say no it has nothing to do with sexual repression and then say it could have something to do with sexual repression.
Socio-economics is a huge issue. There are plenty of documented cases of Latina (and some Asian) women who sell their pre-pubescent virginal daughters to be used for sex in order to get money for bills. Either that or the father/step-father pays the bills, provides a home so they willingly look the other way. Sickeningly enough there are some mothers who see their daughters as competition so if they find out, their daughter is viewed as a whore and gets kicked out of the house. They are different but I suspect their views are in line with fundamentalist values. Is it realistic? Not in pluralistic society but they don't interact much with people outside of their own community or belief system so it probably doesn't seem strange to them. Are they fighting basic biology? Probably. Same. It's like watching a train wreck, hard to believe it's real and can't imagine myself in it. I waited a long time to choose to be a parent and 2 was my limit as well. Michelle Duggar was pregnant for the majority of her fertile lifetime and that is just no bueno for me. I don't understand the question. Sorry. Can you be more specific?
