Here's what I view are our needs for this class: 4 DL (2 DEs & 2 DTs) 4 LBs (2 MLBs, 1 SAM, & 1 Will) 3-4 OL (center, guard & tackle) 3 DBs (2 CBs & a Safety) 2-3 WRs 2 QBs 2-3 RBs That gives us 20-23 recruits. Thoughts?
Those numbers seem right but why has the staff(seemingly) pursued Tight End prospects? Also DB's are a need every year but we seem to be heavy there. Perhaps we will just take athletes that could fill multiple spots. I'm pretty happy with where we are. I think we will land the LB's and WR's we need. I think the group I am watching the most is the DL prospects. We land McFarland and Davenport and we could really continue to serve notice to kids for years to come. We also need to keep recruiting OL stars. Some of these recruits make it here, don't break into the starting lineup, and we wind up losing them. Always seems to be a need and I am glad Miles has paid better attention to it than Saban seemed to.
I think we'd like 1 TE in this class, but its not a need & would only take a top-caliber one. Right now, I don't see one of those committing to LSU. Whether we get McFarland or not, our DLine is going to continue to be great. I trust Miles' OL evaluation. The '07 class of Barksdale, Dworazcyk, Blackwell, Jones & McCoy is going to have some real stars in it. We've recruited OLine very well the past couple of years.
Looks right based on everything I have seen. However, I still have a feeling we can't pass up on Sentimore but maybe that is just me. If we take no more RBs or only 2 WRs maybe it would be an option. What are your thoughts on Sentimore, Parso, if McFarland and Davenport commit? Assuming he makes the grades. Also on the last possible RB spot: To me it seems that Richardson is not going to be in this class because he wants to be a feature back. If so, do we just fill another position or take the Hester like RB/FB, Ledford or some other RB?
I doubt we take a tight end unless we get on a guy and really like. We have a few guys on the roster that could be TE's if we really needed them.
I like it, but for the sake of dialogue, I might add another OL to that list (make it 4-5). CB could leave early. And, from the little I've learned since paying attention to recruiting this year, OL seems like a haven for injuries, disappointing performance, unrealized potential, and various surprises. If you had to compromise, I'd say take one less DL, particularly if we're confident we'll get McFarland and Davenport.
Ainsworth is quoted as saying the coaches want 3 OL in this class, but I put 3-4 based two factors: If Downs is really an OL, and if we manage to get one of the Utah guys. We've taken 10 OL in the past 2 years, so I think 5 in this class is a real stretch. Ciron Black probably could leave early, but I don't expect him to (although I remember Henson mentioning the possibility so the coaches are taking that into account). OLine is no different from any other position - they all have injuries & players that don't perform up to expectations. We lose our entire DL next year (assuming RJF goes pro early). I think 4 DL is a must.
Miami lock. I think there are only 2 other guys on our board at TE right now, but we might find some more this summer/this coming season.
