There's no such mandate in the law. The new law provides grants to states that enact certain highway safety establishing drunk driving courts, investing in case management software, and buying technologies that better monitor or treat impaired drivers. Making our highways safer is, indeed, 100% infrastructure, but to call it a "mandate" is inaccurate.

Government is entirely correct and justified in imposing restrictions on public PRIVILEGES, especially upon activities that endanger other people. Your liberties end when you unnecessarily endanger mine.

Under the Biden administration's $1 trillion infrastructure package, a mandate requires automakers to install new technology in vehicles to prevent motorists from driving intoxicated. As reported by the Associated Press, with the provision, Congress is pushing for the monitoring systems to begin rolling out in new vehicles no later than 2026.

While there are no specifics, the mandated technology in future models 2026 and beyond needs to "passively monitor the performance of a driver of a motor vehicle to accurately identify whether that driver may be impaired." As of now, some drivers convicted of drunk driving must use a breathalyzer device that connects to the car ignition interlock. If their blood alcohol level is exceedingly high when they blow into the tube, the vehicle is automatically disabled.

 

Ugh, why is it always the seatbelts? Someone not wearing seatbelts don't endanger your life.

 

My bad. I just checked, and the bill does require manufacturers to include certain safety features.

yes but it is the law so be it. I kind of grew up with the law so it is one of those built in things like laws against stealing. whatever.

DWI is also against the law. It is not a huge step to monitor what the police already try to do. It brings up a lot of questions though. Different states have their own BAC limit. Can't we go to Chuy's and have a couple of margaritas anymore? How is this technology going to be accurate? DWI people have to go in once a month to have their monitoring devices recalibrated.

 

Weed is being legalized from the left coast to the East coast. There is not an effective technology to monitor driving while stoned. Are pot smokers going to get a break on this?
