You are Les Miles and you just took the reins from Saban

Looking at the team you have, what is your first move to make the 2005 Tiger football team better than last year?

Outside of the obvious (address the QB issue and get all QB's more improved), I would say that he has already addressed what, at least was my own personal concern, special teams.

By hiring a "special teams coordinator", I think it'll give us an edge in an aspect of the game that, under Saban, I don't think got enough attention. Outside of the pure talent that Skyler and our other return men have, they pretty much produced on their own skills. Punt protection (from the Sugar Bowl vs OU to the Capital One Bowl vs Iowa) was lousy at best.

Our "3-man-'up-backs'" formation on punt team never looked comfortable. It took 2 men off the line of scrimmage, and by the time 2-3 defenders got past the line, it was always a case where 2 of the 3 up-backs never quite knew who to block.

Watch the replay of the blocked punt by OU in the National Title game and you'll see not one, but two unblocked Sooners race past the line of scrimmage and 2 of our upbacks not know which one to block, or even worse, thought that the other one would pick up the on-coming defender, but never did.

As far as position-players go, I don't think Miles has all that much work to do because a good portion of our starters on both sides of the ball are back and it's more of an "it is what it is" in terms of player talent--which we're loaded with.

So I vote for special teams to be addressed. If not for the fact that we held tough vs OU, and not have the punt blocked by Iowa, we'd have won 2-straight New Year's Day games (and 3-of-4 instead of 2-of-4).

-Let the team know the coaching staff is commited to the vertical passing game.

-Work on the kicking game, big time.

I wonder if he is going to let Russ and P-lo play their style of football. It looked like Saban had a tight hold around Russ and didn't let him be the playmaker he is capable of being. I know this isn’t HS football but some times you have to tell the QB to get out there and make something happen. I think MM use to do that when he had too and Russ was somewhat hesitant to try something risky.

I agree, No excuse for missing all those EP's and not busting a long kick return all year last year. Green can't be the only guy on the team capable of running one back.

I'd read everything posted to this thread, take it to heart, and follow the whims of the fans. I'd quit after the first time we punt because it proves that LSU hired the wrong man. Oh, I'd win the toss and try and on-side kick.

    1. Keep control over the program, avoid NCAA violations, and keep players in line.
    2. Mentor the QBs and let one of them develop.
    3. Get the passing game going.
    4. Keep the running game going.
    5. Play good defense in the line and replace Daniels and Webster in the backfield.
    6. Shut Perriloux up.
