Yep, Yet Another Matt Flynn Thread (and Penalties, Too)

I was most shocked by the penalties---this was hardly a "road game", yet these guys were somewhere else today and not tuned into the game.

The number of penalties is nearly more troubling than Matt Flynn's play (though, I will say, it's bizarre that he's in the game when he's clearly not his "old self", due to the ankle).

I'm going to give ol' coach the benefit here and assume that he knows full well that Matt Flynn's play has nosedived since the ankle injury.

Why, then, is Matt still playing? Probably gave Matt benefit of the doubt in the rain against USC last week, but there's zero excuse for his indecisiveness, lack of mobility, and poor throws and decision making this week.

Why should Matt get more than, say, 25% of the snaps next week? Inquiring minds wanna know.

    I hear ya, Tejas.

Bottom line: I think CLM is a sentimentalist and really feels for Matt Flynn's backstory, especially the four years of getting splinters while watching Jamarcus and Co.

Also, I think he believes in Matt.

Unfortunately, a bum-ankled Matt is a below average QB. Plus he's working without a healthy Early and a healthy LaFell, whose achilles strain makes him questionable for next week, I believe.

Perrilloux will see plenty of time vs. Florida. Matt will make early mistakes that the Gators will take advantage of (unlike the ones he made vs. the Cocks and the Greenies), and Les may be forced to pull him before halftime.

Let's hope we can run the ball. WELL.

I agree that Flynn didn't look so good, but he was getting pummeled all day long ( part of which seemed to be his lack of mobility ) so its hard to place too much blame on him. O-line looked like a wet paper bag for much of the day.

Assuming that coach has a reason for what he is seeing in practice that none of us get the chance to see week in and week out. If things continue this way then yes, RP needs to be given the nod as he seems to provide the spark that we need to get things going.

That being said - i could not create an argument that will support giving MF more than 25% of the snaps next week other than he's got more big game experience than RP.

i heard this same argument against using hester in the tailback position, when we had a much better williams we could be playing.Williams does not see the holes and keeps running right into defenders, and ryan underthrew and overthrew the same open receiver at the end of the game.Give the guy a break and trust that our coaches know more than us.

Did what we had to do today...Flynn???

We did what we had to in the second half today. I would say our passing game will need to be much more effective against UF next week. Our defense continues to play well against the run. We are vulnerable in the pass game. It seems more and more a max protecting against our 4 man rushes. I'd look for much more exotic schemes next week. Not many blitzs today.

Offensively, our run games continues to be very good. In the passing game, Flynn continues to be off target. IMO, RP will get more playing time against UF. It seems like we have purposely held him back in the passing game. Look for a few surprises from RP in the passing game next week. Many people are blaming the oline. I'd put at least 4 of the 6 sacks on Flynn today. He is still off target and cannot seem to get into the flow.

Looking forward to a fired up LSU team next week.

Coming in cold, having not thrown all day. Yep.

Flynn did the same thing in the first quarter, then started throwing into coverage. Just because coaches have access to more information does not mean they always make the best decisions.

I trust that they make the right choices.

    • Completed 55% of his passes tonight for 258 yds (give him LaFell's 3 drops, and it's 65 % for nearly 300yds)
    • Has NEVER lost a game as a starter (or even come within double digits of doing so)
    • Has been the QB for as many blowouts against top 10 teams as the last 2 LSU qb's combined. (Flyn vs Miami and Va. Tech) (Russel vs. Notre Dame/Mauck vs UGA)
    • While playing with only one leg, on terrible field conditions, with his best wide-out missing, he was the QB in a double digit win against a top 15 SC, who boasts a top 5 defense.
    • Hung 40 on 2 top notch defenses (Va. Tech and Miami), Russel never did that, neither did Mauck, or Rohan, Booty, Craig Nall, Herb Tyler, Jamie Howard, etc, etc.
    • Currently has his team undefeated, ranked #2 in the country, in the driver's seat to win the division, conference, and National championships.
