Playoff as I see it (assuming highest ranked teams are conference champions):
    1 01 ohio st
    2 02 usc
    3 04 florida
    4 06 louisville
    5 08 boise st

    round1
    Boise St @ Louisville

    round 2
    Ohio St v Louisville
    USC v Florida

    round 3
    Ohio St v USC

Should Michigan get in? I don't think so. I believe one team per conference should get in. The diversity of conferences helps to validate the NC as well as eliminate rematches of inter-conference rivals. I also believe conferences should be responsible for choosing their champion. Still, LSU would qualify over Florida and Arkansas if LSU is in top 6, is the highest rated SEC team, and conference champion is less than 6.

I've developed an elaborate playoff, but if I posted it no one would bother to read it. To pick out some incomplete highlights:
    1)one team per conference
2)variable 4-8 team playoff, with any quarter-final games at the home of the higher seed
3)major/ind must be in top 6
4)minor must be in top 12
5)use bcs-like rating system to choose teams (i used the bcs for this example)

I think what will baffle people with your system is the fact that you take an entire week's play just to decide who the 4th team will be in your semi-final matches (the Boise State vs Louisville game).

It is variable between 4-8 teams. This year 5 teams are eligible. The quarter-finals would be held the week after the conference championship games, which would only take another week.

Making a variable playoff allows the playoff to be more reflective of the regular season, maintaining the importance of the regular season.

There are rarely more than four teams still in contention for the national championship by January. A four-team playoff would do it.

First, let the bowl games happen like they always used to. That will winnow the field even more. Then have a four-team, two weekend playoff in January between the top four ranked teams. Perhaps a deserving 5th team will be left out on rare occasions and that will just have to be too bad. They should have ranked higher.

It preserves the bowl games, adds a playoff, and only adds two weekends to the season.

I'm thinking the LSU\USC matchup everyone wants to see would probably be more of a reality with a playoff. And this year we would need Florida or USC to lose if we wanted to make the playoffs.

I would prefer to see the regular season shortened to a 9 0r possibly 10 game season, using the weeks "saved" to conduct the play-in to a real NC.

No need to re-invent the wheel, just simply use the format that is curently being administered in D-II or D-III.

I like an 8-team playoff. For the same argument Red has, if you couldn't finish in the top 8, oh well. That yields a total of 7 games. We have 5 major games being played right now.

The big issue is fans being able to travel to the bowl games for three weeks in a row. This is where the argument between playing playoff games at home versus in the bowls lends the biggest obstacle. The bowls don't want to surrender their "legacy" and more importantly, their $$$$$ for a playoff system. Until the coaches and ADs lobby for the change, we won't see it anytime soon. The reason it works so well in the Div I-AA is that they don't have the fan base issue with needing to move 80,000+ tickets.

I disagree, becuase then that does away with bowls entirely, and I enjoy the bowls tradition. I would sacrifice parity for tradition.

8 team playoff is my preference as well....but hell if they just give us the top 4 in a playoff it would be better than what we have.
