Yea I didn't really like that Webster was blitzing on that play at all. I dunno what the saftey was doing but he didn't pick up Cory's receiver.

had webster caught manning by surprise and knocked him on his ass, we'd all be saying it was a great call....why? because Manning would have never suspected our best cover corner to blitz him. The element of surprise could have caught him off gaurd and totally f%*ked with manning's game. But he got the pass off and are now criticizing them. Hindsight 20/20, like u said.

    Now, to hand out props....
Props to jack hunt for knocking Espy straight from Oxford to Memphis on that HUGE hit on third down in the late fourth. I was sitting directly behind that play and said to myself "oh shit! Espy caught it for a first down in the red zone!!" then jack hunt brung it. and knocked the Fu*@ out of that guy. that was the play of the game in mine eyes.

I do find it funny how anyone can be critical of our defensive play calling this year!

One or two bad defensive plays/calls versus 50-60 solid defensive plays/calls every game ... guess we have to find something to complain about!

    Speaking of Jack Hunt,

this game confirms my feeling that if Jack had played against Fla., the Tigers would be 11-0 right now. He doesn't get all the coverage, but this guy is essential to LSU's success on defense. That booger-knocking hit late in the game was just one example. He is so good at getting the guys in position and controlling the defense. It's too bad there are no stats for what he does, because he has got to be near the top safety in the country, IMO.

You have got to be kidding me?!?!:dis: :dis:

Our D holds one of the better offenses in the nation to 227 total yds. Eli, to 200 yds passing and we are questioning Muschamps play calling. GOOD LORD, people! Look at our defensive stats for the game and for the year, OBVIOUSLY, Muschamp knows a little bit more than we do. I say props to the Defense and the Tigers on a hard fought win.

After that defensive peformance, I'd feel guilty even second-guessing the Ole Miss TD. They probably just gave that TD away to have the chance to unload on Eli a few more times. What a dominating performance. Lavalais for Heisman.

Well said, Tiger Dabbs. I opened this thread expecting to read about the offensive play calling and I read about our Defense. Our Defense won that game!!! Holding the best offense to 7 points is awesome. They were averaging 31.

I don't think anybody is taking anything away from the LSU defense, Muschamp, or his gameplan. I am fully aware of the fact that Muschamp is more knowledgeable of football than myself. I thought this was a place to talk football, not stick your head in the sand when a play goes wrong.

The blitz in question, like all blitzes, carries with it a certain degree of risk. As much as it pains me to say, I think that manning executed a good play more than it was a bad defensive call. I would like to see a little less risk on third and long. Not to stop blitzing, but with a linebacker instead of webster, which could free up a safety for help. For example the play where jack hunt put the big hit to jar the ball loose on the last drive.

I don't think you stop making cornerback blitzes just because you think your best DB needs to be in coverage all of the time. Sometime the CB blitz surprises the QB. Its part of Nicks total blitz package and I have no problem with it.

Landry just didn't cover his man tightly enough, but the guy is just a freshman and doing a fine job overall. I'll cut him slack on a sub-par play, now and then. Happens to everybody at some point. Even Webster, remember Arkansas?

I agree, manning made a good read. Probably only 1 of 3 he made all day. I didn't suggest to stop blitzing cornerbacks. I suggested safety help or double coverage on third and long. In order to free up safeties you can't really blitz cornerbacks. Just a situational thing. I have no beef with our blitz packages. But the more I think about it, 17-7 leaves the door open to riskier calls.
