I know we still won the game, but did anyone notice in my opinion the worst defensive call by LSU this year. It was the forth quarter and Ole Miss facing 3rd down and 14. I know we blitz all the time, but the coaches decided to blitz with Corey Webster... our best DB. He vacated his receiver (Bill Flowers) who was covered by Laron Landry and caught a 43 yard pass for a first down and set up their only offensive touchdown. Just an observation I had at the game live and confirmed it when I watched the replay a little while ago. Ole Miss should have never had a chance to score on that possesion... I don't think they would have completed the pass if Webster was back there. Anyone else notice this call?
i remember the play....i didnt notice that Webster blitzed though. i just thought it was a blown assignment.
Yes, you are correct. In addition, we were getting to Manning with our standard four down line. There was no reason to blitz at this point of the game.
Right before the play, Muschamp said "this is really stupid and will never work and will probably cost us the game but I'm going to call it anyway". 20-20 hindsight dudes. Perhaps you also noticed that Manning was virtually on his ass when he heaved that prayer.
I was thinking the exact same thing and no this isn't hindsight either. Before the play I was thinking we better not blitz everybody and as the play started the same thing was going through my mind. That was one of the few calls I didn't agree with.
Not a horrible call but I think that Webster would have knocked that ball down. Landry was running stride for stride with Flowers and just didn't get his head turned around in time. But Landry does have plenty of time left in his college career to learn how and when to turn your head in coverage.
I think the worst call was the 2 draw plays LSU called with time running out in the second quarter. I could understand if LSU was deep in its own territory, but we were on the 50 yard line. Poor use of timeouts too. I know you don't want to make stupid mistakes, and Mauck was struggling a bit, but at least throw for the endzone. We all know what that can lead to. I also agree with the blitz thing too. I recall a similar thing against Florida when it was 3rd and about 20 and LSU leaves man coverage TE vs daniels or maybe it was landry. It was an easy jump ball. I know manning eats up zone defenses, but why don't we leave a safety over the top sometimes.
The play never should have been called cause the play never should have happened from what i saw live and on the replay. Where was this phantom holding call by Spears?
It's not so big of the actual call to blitz IMHO... but it was the fact that we blitzed with Webster... our best cover DB... I would never blitz him...
