Name a single playmaker. Name a WR who can catch the ball, break tackles, and get yards after the catch. Name a RB who is a threat to break off a TD from anywhere on the field. Name a tight end who can get open downfield versus even ordinary linebackers. Josh Reed, Lebrandoon Toefield, Dominick Davis, Michael Clayton, Devery Henderson. If LSU had had 2 of those 5 guys this year, and perhaps a D that knew how to force a turnover, they'd easily be SEC Champs. I don't think Jimbo is great, but most people who post are laying too much blame on him. It's hard to set the world on fire with cheap matches. ldskule:
How about you name an RB that can score a TD from anywhere on the field, other than Reggie Bush and Adrian Peterson. Pretty short list. However, Addai is a stud. The guy's battled injuries for about two months now. How many threads and posts is it going to take for people to feel better about being wrong about LSU's WRs? 10? 45? 1045? Maybe try starting a thread arguing that the sun is indeed hot, and that water, in its liquid form, is pretty wet.
I'm not gonna say LSU doesn't have these types of players. Skyler can catch, avoid tackles, and score from anywhere. Joe Addai has shown in the past that he can score from long distances. I think for some reason or another, the mental state of this team hasn't been quite right all year. Because these guys are making mental errors. Bowe's drops were never a problem before, so we know he can catch. I think it has something to do with his head, maybe a confidence problem. I don't think you can blame this on coaching, because Bennie couldn't catch a cold the last 3 years, now he's a viable deep threat because of his sure hands. So, saying LSU doesn't have playmakers isn't entirely accurate, just for some reason they never fully showed up. What remains to be seen, is if they can get over this funk these guys seem to be in.
I'm just railing against those who are demanding Jimbo's head. I don't read every post or thread, so if mine is old hat, I didn't mean for it to be. :geauxtige
I won't agree with you about not having any talent on offense, but I will somewhat agree about playmakers. LSU's offense has guys that have the talent and ability to make plays, but they need to make them on a more CONSISTENT basis. For instance, Dwayne Bowe is a very, very talented WR, and made a great play in the Bama game. But the dropped TD in the Auburn game and the disasterous Arkansas game hurt him. It's a lack of a consistent playmaker. And the same thing can be said about most of our WRs - make a play. Josh Reed and Michael Clayton were consistent - most of the time when they were thrown the ball it was going to be caught and once it was caught they were a threat to take it the distance. If the WRs had caught just half of the balls they dropped this year, JR's completion percentage would've been like 62% and he'd thrown for about 3100 yards. As far as RBs are concerned, I think we lost our "big play" RB when Alley went down. Joe Addai is a warrior and plays as hard as anyone and is a workhorse runningback, and his injury has really hurt. But Addai isn't the breakaway run type of back. I will agree with you about the lack of turnovers by the defense. That was something Pellini himself said his defenses prided themselves on was getting turnovers and that just has not been the case with this defense.
I agree with you for the most part. We have very few quick strike players. Look at the New England Patriots. They had very few explosive players. Just a sound team, with great playcalling.
Fair enough...the yapping about Jimbo is kind of funny, as there is a gulf between perceived talent on the roster and the reality. I see the point you're making, and just thought you were complaining about the obviously lackluster play from some of the guys. I'm sure Jimbo's playcalling isn't perfect, but execution seems to be the real issue.
The LSU offence has plenty of raw talent, but for some reason, it didn't show on the field. But the do have talent.
Earlier this year, probably around the third game or so, I asked if LSU was a run first or pass first team... did they like to run to set up the pass or pass to set up the run? The question was asked seriously. Now the season is over except for the bowl. I've watched pretty much every game... and I still don't know Jimbo's base philosophy. Maybe it's just me.
